BOSTON -
The Boston University softball team (26-18, 10-2 AE) completed its sweep of Binghamton (21-15, 6-9 AE) with a 7-6 victory on Sunday afternoon. The Terriers were led offensively by junior Christina Valdes, who went 3-for-4, and classmate Caitlin Rentler, who recorded two hits with two RBIs. After the Bearcats tied the game in the top of the seventh, BU came back to score the winning run in the bottom half of the frame as the Terriers take sole possession of first place in the conference standings.
In all, BU recorded nine hits and took advantage of five fielding errors by the Bearcats. Junior April Setterlund recorded one double to break her own single-season record, which now stands at 16. Setterlund also swiped two bags in the game to bring her single-season total to 16.
Sophomore Emily Roesch knocked in one run off a double and stole one base, while Rentler hit her first career triple - a stand-up three-bagger into right field. In addition to her strong batting performance, Valdes was a threat along the base paths as she stole two bases on the afternoon and scored the game-winning run.
Senior Cassidi Hardy started the game on the mound and went 4.1 innings, striking out eight batters and surrendering four runs on four hits. Freshman Whitney Tuthill closed out the last 2.2 frames and picked up her ninth win of the season as she struck out one and allowed two runs on five hits.
In the first, BU put one on the board with two outs on back-to-back doubles from Setterlund and Roesch and then loaded the bases on a walk and a hit-by-pitch; however, a fly out to left field got Binghamton out the jam.
In the third, BU added three runs as Rentler tripled down the right line, driving in freshman Taylor Cowan and Moeller, and Valdes followed up with an RBI single into left field that easily plated Rentler.
In the fourth, Binghamton drew to within two when the Bearcats' Stephanie DeLuca hit a two-run home run into right field. In the bottom half of the frame, Setterlund scored again when she stole third and advanced home on a throwing error by Binghamton's Deannie Plemon. Roesch later crossed home on a fielding error at shortstop.
In the fifth, Binghamton threatened with a bases-loaded jam on two hits and a walk and it went on to score one on another walk. One at-bat later, the Bearcats tacked on one more on a ground out.
The Bearcats rallied in the seventh with two runs off two hits to tie the score at 6-6 and then load the bases on an infield single; however, a ground out to sophomore Erica Casacci got BU out of the jam heading into the bottom of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Terriers put runners on the corners and with Setterlund at bat she struck the ball towards shortstop, but a throwing error that went over Binghamton's Stephanie DeLuca at first base brought Valdes home for the game-winning run.
The Terriers will next host Providence this Wednesday (April 28) in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
