Box Score
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -
The Boston University softball team defeated crosstown foe Harvard, 4-1, on Thursday afternoon. Sophomore Emily Roesch scored a run and drove in a pair as she went 3-for-3 on the day and helped the Terriers improve to 27-18 overall. The Crimson dropped to 22-21 on the season.
Roesch's three-hit performance was a season high for the second baseman since returning to the field in late March following an injury. Freshman Whitney Tuthill went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and picked up the win in the pitcher's circle as she went five innings with two strikeouts, four hits and one run to improve to 10-4.
Senior Cassidi Hardy pitched the final two frames to earn her first save of the season, striking out three and surrendering no hits and just on base runner on an fielding error.
The Terriers put one run on the board in the second inning on an RBI single to left center as Tuthill drove in Roesch. Roesch returned the favor in the third with a two-run single into right field that plated senior Rachel Hebert and sophomore Erica Casacci. BU tacked on another run in the same inning as Tuthill sent a bloop single into left field that brought home senior Rachel Moeller from second base.
Harvard drew to within three in the fourth inning as the Crimson's Whitney Shaw drove one past the scoreboard in left field to move to the score to 4-1. In the same inning, Harvard's Jen Francis doubled into left field to put runners on second and third and the potential game-tying run at bat; however, BU got out of the rest of the frame unscathed as Hebert caught a foul ball to record the third out.
Neither team scored the rest of the way, and Harvard only had 10 batters in the final three innings and one base runner on an error.
BU will now travel north to Maine for a three-game series in Orono, before hosting Hartford in the regular-season finale on Saturday, May 8 and Sunday, May 9.
