BOSTON - The Boston University softball team (17-10, 2-0 AE) handed Stony Brook (13-10, 3-2 AE) its first two conference losses of the season as it claimed 3-1 and 7-0 victories on Saturday afternoon at BU Softball Field. The pitching duo of senior Cassidi Hardy and Whitney Tuthill shut down the Seawolves' offense, while junior April Setterlund and Tuthill led the way in the batter's box for BU.
Hardy picked up the victory in game one to tie Audrey West ('96) for career victories (75) and take sole possession of the career complete games record (82). The Jupiter, Fla. native struck out five batters and allowed one run on five hits. Tuthill followed up with a complete-game effort of her own, taking a no-hitter into the fifth inning, striking out four Seawolves and earning her second shutout of the season.
Setterlund upped her season batting average to .605 with three hits in four at-bats with three doubles and two RBIs. Tuthill also batted above .500 on the afternoon, going 3-for-6 with a pair of RBIs and senior Rachel Moeller went deep for the second time this season to plate three runners.
Defensively, the Terriers turned two double plays, including one to end the second game, while sophomore Erica Casacci made a handful of strong plays, which included a line drive to second that she was forced to dive out for.
GAME 1
In the first inning, SBU's Alyssa Struzenberg loaded the bases on a walk and back-to-back hit batters and Moeller drove in Casacci on a sacrifice flyout to center field to take the 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, the Terriers tacked on one more, after they took advantage of a passed ball and an error at shortstop to score Moeller.
In the top of the sixth inning, Stony Brook drew to within one run when Brigette Martin singled to right field and brought home Vicki Kavitsky from second base. In the bottom half of the frame, sophomore Emily Roesch doubled to center field to put runners on second and third with Tuthill walking into the batters box in the next at-bat. Freshman Taylor Cowan ended up scoring on an error, which rounded out the scoring of the first game.
GAME 2
Right off the bat in the second game, Setterlund doubled down the right line to plate senior Rachel Hebert and Casacci in the bottom of the first inning as the Terriers took an early two-run advantage. Cowan tacked on one more with a single up the middle to bring Setterlund home and scored one run later on Roesch's double to center field to make it a 4-0 game.
In the bottom of the third, the Terriers added two more runs when Setterlund got on base on a double to left center and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt then Moeller stepped up to box and cleared the bases on her second home run of the season, moving the score to 6-0.
In the fourth, BU tacked on one more as Tuthill scored on Hebert's single up the middle. In the next half inning, Stony Brook broke up Tuthill's no-hitter with a single into center field; however, the defense held on and retired the next batter to end the frame.
BU's defense remained strong turning a double play to end the sixth and in the seventh the squad ended the game on a 1-5-3 double play.
The Terriers will look to complete the sweep tomorrow with first pitch at noon at BU Softball Field.
