BOSTON - The Boston University softball team dropped a heartbreaker to Connecticut (13-18), 10-9, on Thursday afternoon at BU Softball Field. Down by as many as seven runs, a resilient BU side chipped away at the deficit; however, a seventh-inning rally came up just short as the squad drop to 18-12 overall on the season. Junior April Setterlund went 4-for-5 with two RBIs, while senior Rachel Moeller went 2-for-4 with one home run and four RBIs.

Setterlund was crucial for the Terriers in the seventh inning as she stepped to the plate with runners on first and second with two outs and singled through the right side to plate senior Rachel Hebert; however, after Setterlund was caught in a rundown, sophomore Erica Casacci rounded for home and UConn turned its focus to home plate, recording the out and ending the game.

Moeller recorded a three-run long ball in the bottom of the third to jumpstart the Terriers' offense, while Hebert went 3-for-4 and classmate Caitlin Rentler drove in a run on a double. In all, the Terriers unleashed 13 hits with two doubles and one home run.

In the pitcher's circle, BU used all four available hurlers with senior Megan Currier (2-3) suffering the loss, allowing five runs on five hits. The freshman duo of Whitney Tuthill and Taylor Cowan combined to pitch in the middle innings, while senior Cassidi Hardy came in for the final frame.

In the first inning, UConn came out with its bats hot, recording five hits - including a first-pitch home run - and three runs in the first third of inning. With the bases loaded and just one out, the Huskies plated two more on a fielder's choice and a walk until sophomore Emily Roesch made a play at home and Tuthill forced a ground out to end the inning and get out of the jam.

In the top of the third, the Huskies added two more on a stand-up double to center field and a follow-up single. In the bottom half of the frame, Moeller put the Terriers up on the scoreboard with a three-run blast to right center with two outs to make it a 7-3 game. After Cowan drew a walk, Roesch stepped up to the plate and delivered an RBI double to center field that drew the Terriers to within three runs.

In the top of the fifth, UConn tacked on two more before Setterlund scored in the next half of inning after getting on base on a single and advancing to third on an error in centerfield. Rentler later crossed home plate to cut the deficit to three runs, 9-6.

In the bottom of the sixth and down by four, 10-6, the Terriers loaded the bases and ended up plating two before UConn's Kiki Saveriano recorded a strikeout to end the threat.

In the bottom of the seventh and with the score 10-8, the Terriers put junior Christina Valdes and Hebert on first and second on an error and a single, respectively, and Setterlund stepped to the plate and singled through the right side, plating Hebert. However, Setterlund got caught in a rundown with Casacci rounding home and UConn turned its focus to home plate, recording the out and ending the game.

BU will return to conference action this weekend as it heads to Albany for a three-game series on Saturday (April 10) and Sunday (April 11).
