ORONO, Maine - The No. 1 Boston University softball team (33-20) dropped its first game, 2-0, to No. 3 Stony Brook (32-20-1) on Saturday afternoon at the 2010 AE Softball Championship. The second game will begin at approximately 2:30 p.m. to decide this year's conference champion.

BU connected on six hits off Stony Brook; however, the Seawolves scored one in the third on a sacrifice hit and one in the fourth on a home run. Senior Cassidi Hardy (19-8) was charged with the loss, striking out nine batters and surrendering two runs on three hits.

Through two innings, the Terriers managed three hits off SBU's Alyssa Struzenberg; however, only junior April Setterlund was able to get to second off the hurler and for the Terriers a strong defense and hard throwing from Hardy kept the Seawolves off the bags.

The Seawolves picked up their first hit in the bottom of the third when Katelyn O'Donnell singled to shortstop and beat out the throw to become the first Stony Brook player to get on base all game. Back-to-back bunts advanced O'Donnell to third and with runners on the corners and only one out another sacrifice bunt brought her home. A strikeout to end the inning minimized the damage for BU and left one on base.

Two singles to lead off the fourth and an error at third loaded the bases for BU with no outs; however, SBU got out of the jam with a line out and a double play on an infield fly. In the bottom of the fourth, the Seawolves took a two-run lead when Crista Cerrone hit a solo home run to left field.

Over the next two innings, things stayed quiet as both teams went three up, three down, until the bottom of the sixth when SBU's Vicki Kavitsky lined it into right field but a misplay in the outfield advanced her to second. A sacrifice hit moved her to third with two outs; however, Hardy dug in and strikeout the final batter.

In the top of the seventh, BU had one more chance to rally and junior Caitlin Rentler singled into center field with freshman Taylor Cowan the potential game-tying run at-bat. After a double play put two outs on the board, junior Christina Valdes drew a walk with senior Rachel Hebert the new game-tying run in the batter's box; however, a fly out to left field ended the game.

The second game of today's championship bout with begin at approximately 2:30 p.m.
