BALTIMORE, Md. - Looking to extend its winning streak to four games, the Boston University men's basketball team continues its road trip at UMBC on Monday with action slated to begin at 7 p.m. The Terriers (8-10, 3-1 AE) are coming off a thrilling come-from-behind victory at Albany that featured them trailing by 16 at the half.
Helping BU snap a seven-game losing streak on the road this season was senior John Holland, who tied a career high in 3-pointers with six to finish with 27 points and eight rebounds against the Great Danes. His performance leaves him four shy of 1,900 and 36 behind No. 2 record holder Drederick Irving. He is the America East's top scorer this season at 18.8 ppg and will face off against the Retrievers' junior Chris De La Rosa, who is second at 16.9 ppg but No. 1 in conference-only games at 22.8 ppg.
The Terriers hold a 13-6 record over UMBC (1-16, 0-4 AE) and have won four of the last five meetings. Last season, Holland was the thorn in the Retrievers' side, posting a double-double in both contests. At the RAC Arena, he recorded 25 points and 12 rebounds for the 79-61 win and then at Case Gym posted 25 points and 10 rebounds during the 75-63 victory that saw both Jake O'Brien and Corey Lowe ('10) finish with 20 points.
With Lowe graduating over the summer and O'Brien out due to injury, Holland will look to other teammates to step up offensively against UMBC this season. Junior Darryl Partin is second on the team at 13.4 ppg and during the last four games has averaged 17.5 ppg to become a key contributor in the Terriers' strong start to the league schedule. A third scorer has not appeared as different players have stepped up at different times.
Against Vermont, freshman D.J. Irving recorded 16 points, but on Saturday at Albany, he was the facilitator, recording seven assists with zero turnovers. Junior Matt Griffin came off the bench with nine points in the second half, and both junior Jeff Pelage and freshman Travis Robinson hit critical baskets down the stretch against the Great Danes.
For the Retrievers, Travis King is second on the team in scoring at 10.2 ppg, while Justin Fry leads them in rebounding at 5.6 rpg. They have a 1-6 record at home with their lone win coming against Niagara (68-67). In conference action, they fell to Stony Brook (64-56) and Maine (82-67).
Following the contest, the Terriers will return home and host Stony Brook on Thursday (Jan. 20) at 7:30 p.m. The first 750 fans in attendance will receive a BU replica jersey.
