BOSTON - Senior John Holland scored 20 points and the defense held Stony Brook to 26 percent shooting in the second half to propel the Boston University men's basketball team to a 67-62 victory Thursday night at Case Gymnasium. With their fourth win in the last five contests and third straight at home, the Terriers improve to 9-11 and 4-2 in conference play.

Trailing 46-37 with 13:47 remaining in regulation, the Terriers went on a 21-4 run in the following nine minutes to grab a 58-50 lead. The Seawolves (7-11, 2-4 AE) battled back to cut the deficit to three on two separate occasions in the final minute, but BU went 5-of-6 at the charity stripe to pull out the victory.

Named BU's America East Player of the Game, Holland posted seven rebounds and recorded 29 points to move into second-place all-time at BU with 1,949 points. Freshman D.J. Irving had a strong performance as well, recording 13 points and six assists against just two turnovers. Junior Patrick Hazel finished with a game-high eight rebounds to help the Terriers win the battle at the boards, 35-34.

Allowing more than 60 points for the first time in eight games, the Seawolves were led by their AE Player of the Game Dallis Joyner, who had a team-high 15 points and six rebounds. Three others scored in double figures, including Dave Coley (13), Bryan Dougher (12) and Anthony Jackson (10). SBU shot 44.8 percent and led by as many as 10 in the first half, but went 7-of-27 (.259) and 1-of-11 from beyond the arc in the second for the loss.

The lead only changed once in the entire contest, as the Seawolves jumped out with two 3-pointers. Starting in his first career game, freshman Travis Robinson hit a layup to cut the deficit to one (8-7), but SBU then went on a 13-4 run capped by Joyner's jumper at 11:36.

Both teams exchanged brief scoring spurts with BU moving within one at 34-33 off a steal and dunk by Holland. Joyner responded with another jumper to give the Seawolves the three-point lead heading into the locker room. Shooting 41.7 percent from the field and 11-of-14 at the charity stripe, the Terriers hurt themselves with eight turnovers.

In the second, they took better care of the ball but missed their first six field goal attempts. SBU took advantage and grabbed a 42-34 lead at 16:15 before Holland finally broke his team's cold shooting streak with a 3-pointer.

Recording 30 points in his last appearance at The Roof, Dougher nailed two jumpers to push the Seawolves' lead back to nine (46-37) before BU started to scratch its way back into the contest.

Trailing 49-45 with 9:03 remaining, Holland scored the game's next 11 points with three 3-pointers and a fast break dunk resulting from his third steal of the game at 6:51.

When Dougher banked a 3-point attempt to cut the lead to 65-62 with 10 seconds left in regulation, the Terriers inbounded to Holland, who then hit both attempts at the line to finish a perfect 6-of-6 and prevent the chance of the Seawolves sending the game to overtime.

As a team, BU went 19-of-25 (.760) at the charity stripe and prevented SBU from getting a single fast break point despite committing a total of 14 turnovers.

Improving to 15-6 all-time against the Seawolves, the Terriers will next travel to Hartford on Saturday (Jan. 22) for a 4 p.m. tip-off on Comcast SportsNetwork.
