PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No. 7/8 Boston University men's ice hockey team drew even after an early 3-0 deficit, but Providence regained the lead and hung on for a 5-3 victory on Friday evening at Schneider Arena. The Terriers are now an even 1-1-0 both overall and in Hockey East play.
Faced with a 3-0 deficit entering the second period, the Terriers got tallies from sophomore Matt Nieto and senior Corey Trivino in the middle stanza before sophomore Garrett Noonan completed the comeback with a mark just 3:13 into the third.
PC, however, regrouped and used a power play to regain the lead at 4-3 at 5:42 of the third before adding another tally just over five minutes later.
Senior Kieran Millan recorded 25 saves for the Terriers, who went 1-of-6 on the power play. The Friars also converted on one of six chances with the man advantage and got a 23-save performance from senior Alex Beaudry.
The Friars, who were playing in their season opener under first-year head coach Nate Leaman, scored twice within a span of 34 seconds in the opening minutes and then tacked on another with 3:36 left in opening frame.
Nieto and Trivino both scored for the second time in as many games to get BU back in the contest. At 1:31 of the second, Nieto potted the puck off a feed from junior Alex Chiasson. Trivino scored off a rebound just over a minute later with assists going to junior Wade Megan and sophomore Adam Clendening.
Noonan knotted it up the contest off a feed from sophomore Sahir Gill, wristing a shot from the left dot that just went under the crossbar. Senior Chris Connolly started the play with a nice hustle play along the left boards.
The game-winning goal came from the stick of junior Miles Harvey, whose blast from the top of the zone on a power play eluded Millan.
The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 15) when they host No. 3 Denver at Agganis Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
