LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Boston University softball team (1-1) split its first two games of the season on Friday afternoon at the Louisville Red & Black tournament. The Terriers handed SIU-Edwardsville a 4-0 defeat before suffering a 5-0 loss to host Louisville in the afternoon game. Red-shirt freshman Jayme Mask had an impressive day, going 5-for-7 at the plate with two runs.
Rookie Holli Floetker made her debut in the pitcher's circle and threw her first career shutout as she struck out five SIUE batters, surrendering just three hits and two walks. Sophomore Whitney Tuthill was charged with the loss in the second game as she gave up four runs - three earned - on six hits.
Mask, who returned to the lineup after suffering a season-ending injury just 10 games into the 2010 season, went 3-for-4 against SIUE and connected on an additional two hits against Louisville. Batting at the top of the order she was able cross home plate twice and swiped two bags. Junior Melanie Delgado also returned to the lineup for the first time after a two-year absence due to injury, and went 2-for-5 with one run. Senior April Setterlund was 1-for-6 with one double, one RBI, and one stolen base.
Against SIUE, the Terriers took it to the opposition early as Mask led off the game with a single up the middle and two at-bats later scored on a Setterlund double. The game would remain a 1-0 BU advantage until the fourth inning when it would tack on one more on a sacrifice fly out by freshman Amy Ekart.
The fifth inning saw the Terriers add their final two runs of the game onto the scoreboard as they loaded the bases on back-to-back singles and a fielding error. Delgado scored during the miscue at first base and Mask later went on to swipe home on a double-steal play with freshman Megan Volpano, who took second.
Floetker gave up just one hit the rest of the way and retired all three SIUE batters in order in the seventh to secure the shutout victory.
The second game proved a tougher endeavor for the Terriers as they were shutout, but was able to get four hits off Louisville. Mask provided two of those as she swung for a single in the first and bunted in the fifth. Freshman Brittany Clendenny and Delgado recorded the other hits for the Terriers.
The Cardinals put up two runs in the first on a two-run home run to left field and later added two more in the fifth on a triple that plated two more. They rounded out the scoring in the sixth on an RBI double.
BU will return to the diamond on Saturday against Wright State at 10 a.m. and Miami (Ohio) at 2 p.m.
