BOSTON - Overcoming choppy and gusty conditions on the 2,000-meter Charles River course, the Boston University women's rowing team defeated Syracuse for the Kittell Cup on Saturday morning. Winning three of the four races overall, the Terriers were victorious in the varsity eight race for the third time in four seasons against the Orange.

Coxed by senior Alex Thornton and stroked by junior Cheryl Copson, the V8 boat posted a time of 7:50.0 and finished 3.7 seconds ahead of Syracuse for the program's fifth win in the series, which began in 2003.

The Orange started off the morning with a 12-second victory in the 3V8 race, but the Terriers came right back with three straight wins.

Coxed by sophomore Mia Serabian and stroked by freshman Mackenzie Wiler, the top V4 boat finished with a time of 8:42, as Syracuse came in second at 9:13.

In the 2V8, junior Kayla Rivers coxed the Terriers to an 11-second win (8:02 - 8:13) with senior Mariel Boomgaardt sitting in the stroke position.

During the afternoon, BU was supposed to race Tulsa, but the river conditions were worse due to the wind. As a result, the event was canceled.

The Terriers will now travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the annual Dale England Cup on Friday (April 1) and Saturday (April 2). Last year at the event, the V8 boat earned a sweep.

This season, host Indiana, Michigan State and Gonzaga will be competing.
