STONY BROOK, N.Y. -
The Boston University softball team (15-8, 3-0 AE) completed its three-game sweep of Stony Brook (8-12, 0-3 AE) on Sunday afternoon with a 9-0 victory in five innings. Junior Erica Casacci went 2-for-4 from the batter's box and freshman Holli Floetker drove in a pair of runs. Sophomore Erin Schuppert picked up the win in the pitcher's circle with a complete-game shutout.
The Terriers unleashed 11 hits and pushed nine more across the plate as they finished the weekend with 32 total runs in three games. Casacci batted .500 on Sunday with one stolen base, while freshman Megan Volpano also recorded two hits with one RBI. In all, nine different batters connected on at least one hit in Sunday's shutout.
Schuppert improved to 5-1 in the circle as she hurled all five innings, surrendering just three hits, while issuing two walks and striking out seven batters.
BU opened the scoring in the second inning as senior Caitlin Rentler and junior Melanie Delgado recorded back-to-back solo home runs. To lead off the third inning, red-shirt freshman Chelsea Kehr, who hit two grand slams on Saturday, completed a successful weekend with a triple down the right field line. Two at-bats later, freshman Brittany Clendenny smacked an RBI single and Volpano later scored on a fielding error.
After adding one in the fourth, the Terriers stretched the advantage to 9-0 with a four-run fifth inning, highlighted by RBI singles from Volpano and senior Christina Valdes.
BU will next play a pair of midweek non-conference match-ups as it travels to Connecticut on Wednesday (March 20) and hosts crosstown rival Boston College on Thursday (March 31). Both games are schedule for 4 p.m.
