STORRS, Conn. - Freshman Megan Volpano cracked her first career home run to lift the Boston University softball team (16-8, 3-0 AE) to a 1-0 victory over regional rival Connecticut (11-13) on Wednesday night at Burrill Field.
Volpano, who was 2-for-3, broke the scoreless deadlock in the second inning and gave the Terriers the only run they would need to secure the victory. From there freshman hurler Holli Floetker (6-2) took over, throwing her third shutout of the season as she whiffed six batters and gave up just four hits and one walk. Only three base runners made it to second and no UConn runner made it to the third bag on the BU defense's watch.
BU put pressure on the Huskies immediately in the first, loading the bases on a single and back-to-back walks , however, the defense was able to get out of the jam with a line out to first base. UConn had its chance in the bottom half of the frame as it put runners in first and second, but on the next at-bat Volpano made a heads up play and got the lead runner out at third. A ground out on the next at-bat ended the inning.
In the top of the next inning, Volpano stepped to the plate and went yard for the first time in her collegiate career as her hit sailed into left field and out of the park. The Terriers' went on to load the bases again but a short infield pop-up ended the frame.
After Volpano's long ball neither side was able to put any runner across home plate and in the final two frames Floetker retired all six batters in order.
BU will host crosstown rival Boston College on Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. at BU Softball Field.
