WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Redshirt freshman Chelsea Kehr recorded her third grand slam of the season and sophomore Erin Schuppert threw a complete-game shutout as the Boston University softball team (27-12, 9-3 America East) defeated Hartford (7-30, 2-10 AE), 9-0, on Monday afternoon.
Schuppert matched a season high with seven strikeouts and allowed just three singles and one walk all game. With the win, the Atlantic Beach, Fla., native improved to 9-3 in the circle and lowered her ERA to a team-best 1.51.
Kehr was 1-for-2 and drove in four runs off the blast in the third inning that stretched the game from a two-run advantage to an imposing six-run lead. Freshman Megan Volpano was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, while senior April Setterlund scored three runs.
BU wasted no time jumping ahead of Hartford with two runs in the first off a wild pitch and an RBI double from Volpano. The flood gates opened in the third when the Terriers loaded the bases on three walks before Kehr stepped to the plate and unleashed her seventh homer of the season. Freshman Amy Ekart added one more when she drove in classmate Brittany Clendenny on a double to right field.
BU tacked on its final two runs in the fourth on a double by Volpano that scored Setterlund and junior Erica Casacci, who reached on a single to left field. The Hawks got their first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth and got two more in the fifth, but they stranded base runners on first and third as senior catcher Caitlin Rentler caught a pop up to end the contest.
BU, which is riding an eight-game winning streak, will play two midweek contests on the road as they travel to Holy Cross on Tuesday (April 26) at 4 p.m. and UMass on Wednesday (April 27) at 5 p.m. It will then host Albany over the weekend with Senior Day festivities taking place on Sunday (May 1).
NOTES: Setterlund is now 10 hits and 14 walks away from breaking program career marks. She also needs seven more walks to break Christy Leath's single-season record. Redshirt freshman Jayme Mask has scored 38 runs, which ranks ninth at BU for a single season.
