WORCESTER, Mass. - The Boston University softball team (27-13, 9-3 America East) dropped a 6-4 decision to Holy Cross (17-23, 9-7 Patriot) on Tuesday afternoon at Freshman Field.
Senior April Setterlund was 3-for-3 with two runs, one homer, two RBIs and a walk, while freshman Megan Volpano went 2-for-4 with one RBI. In all, the Terriers had 11 hits off Holy Cross starter Camille Trainor with one home run, three doubles and two stolen bases.
Sophomore Whitney Tuthill (8-6) was charged with the loss, going 4.2 innings with six runs - two earned - off five hits and two walks. She struck out three batters. Sophomore Erin Schuppert came into pitch the final 1.1 innings and surrendered just one hit while striking out two and walking two.
BU fell behind in the first inning as Camille Trainor hit her first career homer to give Holy Cross a 1-0 lead. However, Setterlund evened the score in the fourth with a home run of her own, which jumpstarted the Terriers' offense. Volpano and redshirt freshman Chelsea Kehr followed with back-to-back doubles as Volpano scored on the latter hit to grab a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Holy Cross briefly tied the game, but in the top of the fifth Setterlund connected on her third hit of the afternoon to drive in redshirt freshman Jayme Mask on a single up the middle. In the next at-bat Volpano plated Setterlund on a double into right center field.
The Crusaders came storming back in the bottom half as they scored four runs with three coming with two outs on a double and a single. The Terriers were unable to recover from the deficit over the final two frames as their eight-game winning streak came to an end.
BU will look to bounce back on Wednesday (April 27) when it travels to Massachusetts for a 5 p.m. match-up.
NOTES: Setterlund is now seven hits, six home runs and 13 walks away from breaking program career marks. She also needs six more walks to break Christy Leath's single-season record. Redshirt freshman Jayme Mask has scored 39 runs, which ranks eighth at BU for a single season.
