BOSTON - Freshman Holli Floetker struck out a career-high nine batters and classmate Amy Ekart went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, as the top-seeded Boston University softball team downed fourth-seeded UMBC, 9-1, in six innings in the America East tournament at BU Softball Field on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Terriers improved to 33-16.
The America East Pitcher of the Year, Floetker (13-4) fanned nine Retrievers with the complete-game victory. The Fountain Valley, Calif, native took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before UMBC's Katie Ferguson's double ended the bid.
Redshirt freshman Jayme Mask went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, while junior Erica Casacci finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and a stolen base.
The Terriers opened the bottom of the first with two runs. Mask led off the frame with a single through the middle of the diamond and moved to second following a passed ball. After senior April Setterlund was hit by a pitch, redshirt freshman Chelsea Kehr drove a double to the warning track to left center to score Mask.
Setterlund, who moved to third on the play, later scored when Ekart hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
In the bottom of the third, BU tacked on four runs to take a 6-0 lead. Freshman Megan Volpano sent a lead-off double over the outstretched glove of the center fielder and, after Kehr walked, Ekart's RBI single plated Volpano. Classmate Brittany Clendenny was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and sophomore Whitney Tuthill knocked a sacrifice fly to center field to score Valdes, who came in to pinch run for Kehr.
Junior Melanie Delgado then executed a perfect squeeze play, placing the ball between the plate and the pitcher's circle, as Ekart slid around the catcher. Casacci then hit another sacrifice fly for the Terriers to score Clendenny.
UMBC tallied once in the top of the fifth to cut the lead, 6-1. Ferguson ended Floetker's no-hit bid with a lead-off double to right center. With two outs, Lynn Pronobis plated Ferguson with a single down the left-field line.
The Terriers added a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame to take an 8-1 advantage. With runners on the corners, Mask sent a one-out, two-run single past the second baseman to score Casacci and Kruper, who pinch ran for Tuthill.
Ekart opened the bottom of the sixth with a double off the wall and later moved to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Delgado hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Ekart and account for the 9-1 final.
The Terriers will return to action on Friday (May 13) against second-seeded Albany at 11 a.m.
