SMITHFIELD, R.I. - Sophomore Rich Peters finished first among 98 runners as the Boston University men's cross country team opened its 2011 season on Saturday morning at the Bryant Invitational.

Peters edged Northeastern's Eric Jenkins by less than a second with a time of 15:00.04 to claim first-place honors. In all, the Terriers had 14 runners in the race with four in the top 20.

Senior Peter Gilmore was eighth with a time of 15:31.00 and classmates Craig McPhearson (15:52.14) and Joe Greenspun (15:55.27) were 16th and 19th, respectively.

Freshman Aaron Somoroff had a solid showing of 31st in his first collegiate race with a time of 16:18.40. Junior Mike Caputo crossed the line in 16:37.74, good for 42nd, and freshmen Zach Marriott (16:51.17) and Ben Ravetz (16:51.58) and senior Chris Mercurio (16:52.64) finished one after another from 52nd-54th.

Other finishers for BU were sophomores Tom Waterman (56th - 16:53.94) and Brian Greenfield (16:58.88 - 58th) and freshmen Matt Solomon (17:08.05 - 60th), Alex Civitano (17:08.95 - 61st) and John McKeon (17:40.15 - 75th).

The Terriers will next compete on Saturday, Sept. 24, at the Codfish Bowl in Franklin Park.
