STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Despite shooting 46.5 percent from the field and receiving a game-high 21 points from senior Darryl Partin, the Boston University men's basketball team dropped a 66-57 decision at Stony Brook on Friday night. Seeing their seven-game winning streak snapped, the Terriers drop to 11-12 and 7-2 in America East play.
Named America East Player of the Game, Partin went 5-of-9 from behind the arc and 7-of-17 overall to finish as the only Terrier in double figures. He also had a team-high six rebounds, as BU lost the battle at the boards, 33-25. Sophomore D.J. Irving tallied seven points and five assists, while senior Matt Griffin contributed six assists against zero turnovers off the bench.
Improving to 10-0 at home and gaining sole possession of first place, the Seawolves (13-7, 8-1 AE) were led by AE Player of the Game Bryan Dougher's 20 points. Tommy Brenton contributed nine points and a game-high eight rebounds along with four steals.
Trailing 47-34 with 14:15 remaining, the Terriers rallied with a 17-0 run capped by sophomore Travis Robinson's 3-pointer at 6:04 for a 51-47 lead.
In front of an energized crowd, the Seawolves came back though to tie the game, 54-54, on a jumper by Dave Coley at 3:31. Dougher drained a trey and Brenton followed with two free throws to push SBU ahead, 60-54, with 1:48 remaining.
Irving cut the six-point deficit to three on the following possession and helped the defense force Dougher into a turnover under the basket when his foot stepped out of bounds. The Terriers though were unable to move any closer with back-to-back turnovers of their own. SBU went 6-of-8 at the line in the final 40 seconds to snap a five-game losing streak in the series.
In the first half, the Terriers jumped out to a 17-9 lead behind a combined four 3-pointers from Partin, Robinson and sophomore Dom Morris. BU extended the lead to nine (21-12) at 10:01 on freshman Zach Chionuma's jumper.
The Seawolves responded with a 9-0 spurt over the next two minutes and grabbed the 24-23 lead at 7:29 on a 3-pointer from Dougher. They pushed it to seven (37-30) on an Al Rapier fastbreak layup six minutes later, but Partin kept BU within four (37-33) at the half with his fourth trey in the contest.
BU shot an impressive 59.1 percent in the first half but committed seven turnovers against SBU's four while also allowing the Seawolves to score eight second-chance points off eight offensive rebounds.
To start the second, the Terriers went nearly seven minutes without a made field goal, and SBU grabbed a 47-34 advantage with 14:15 left behind eight points from Dougher. Redshirt-freshman Malik Thomas drove to the basket for a tough layup at 13:23, igniting the 17-0 run.
The Terriers finished 20-of-43 (.465) overall and 10-of-19 (.526) from behind the arc, though hurt themselves at the line, shooting 7-of-17 (.412).
Hitting 21-of-47 attempts from the field for 44.7 percent, the Seawolves went 19-of-28 (.679) from the charity stripe and had 20 points off 15 BU turnovers while committing 12 miscues.
Currently a game behind SBU and half a game ahead of Vermont for second place, the Terriers will next host the Catamounts on Wednesday (Feb. 1) at Agganis Arena with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
The game will follow the BU and UVM women's contest, which will begin at 5 p.m. Both contests will be shown live on ESPN3.
