BURLINGTON, Vt. - Senior Grant Rollheiser made 18 saves and junior Sean Escobedo scored his first two goals of the year, as the No. 5/6 Boston University men's ice hockey team posted a 5-0 shutout victory against Vermont on Friday evening at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Escobedo broke a scoreless tie at 2:21 of the second as part of a three-goal effort in the middle stanza for the Terriers.
BU added two more in the third to earn their fourth shutout of the year and improve to 19-11-1 overall and 15-8-1 in Hockey East play. The Terriers now stand in second place in the league standings and can clinch home ice on Saturday with a win or a Maine loss.
Juniors Justin Courtnall and Wade Megan and freshman Cason Hohmann all found the back of the net for the Terriers. Senior Ryan Ruikka, sophomore Sahir Gill and freshman Evan Rodrigues contributed two assists apiece.
The Terriers outshot the Catamounts by a 34-18 margin as senior Rob Madore made 29 saves for the home squad.
A lengthy video review took place before the Terriers were able to get on the scoreboard. Escobedo's shot from the left circle went off Madore and just barely got past the goal line before he was able to cover it up. A no-goal call on the ice was overturned to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Hohmann pushed the lead to 2-0 at 10:08 of the second as he took a pass from Ruikka and fired a shot from the far edge of the right circle that got through traffic before going between Madore's legs.
Escobedo's first career two-goal game became a reality when he roofed a rebound at the top of the crease on a Terrier power play just under two minutes after Hohmann's marker. Gill and freshman Alexx Privitera, who returned after missing seven games with a broken wrist, assisted on the play.
Early in the third, BU quickly put the game away with a pair of goals 29 seconds apart. Megan collected a loose puck in the slot and buried it at 1:13 to push his team-leading goal total to 16. Courtnall finished off a 3-on-1 rush moments later with his fourth goal of the season.
BU went 1-of-9 on the power play and was a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
The two teams will wrap up their weekend series on Saturday (Feb. 25) at 7 p.m.
