BOSTON - Highlighted by its first Council Cup victory against Northeastern since 2005, the Boston University women's rowing team finished third overall at the Beanpot Regatta on the Charles River Saturday morning.

Coxed by senior Kayla Rivers and stroked by classmate Cheryl Copson, the varsity eight boat  stayed close with No. 12 Radcliffe for much of the race before the Crimson sped away toward the end for the victory with a time of 6:25.9. By finishing ahead of BU, Radcliffe retained possession of the Allen-DeWolfe Trophy.

The Terriers' top crew took second in the V8 race at 6:32.1, finishing 6.2 seconds ahead of Northeastern to reclaim the Council Cup. The Huskies held off MIT by 0.6 seconds for third place, while BC took fifth at 6:54.1.

The victory over Northeastern will serve as a confidence booster, as BU will race the Huskies again on April 29 in Virginia for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship, an event NU has won two of the last three years. Fourth-year head coach Stacey Rippetoe announced the Terriers joining the CAA last August.

In other races, the second varsity eight boat placed third with a time of 6:57.5, edging the Eagles by 0.5 seconds. Radcliffe won at 6:34.2, while NU took second at 6:54.0.

BU also took third in the third varsity eight race (7:16.0) and fourth in the varsity four race (7:45.2).

After competing in its lone race of the spring on the Charles River, the Terriers will hit the road for Syracuse next Saturday (March 31). BU has won the Kittel Cup three of the last four years.
