BOSTON - The Boston University softball team was edged by Stony Brook, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at the BU Softball Field. The Terriers dropped the first contest of the three-game series to move their record to 19-10 overall and 3-1 in America East play.

For the second straight game, the Terriers were shutout as BU only managed one hit off of Stony Brook’s Allison Cukrov, the reigning America East Pitcher of the Week.

Sophomore Holli Floetker was on the mound for the Terriers. The right-hander allowed 10 hits and one run while striking out three batters to move her record to 12-3 on the season.

The Seawolves scored the only run of the game in the top of the second inning as Bernadette Tenuto singled to right field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Jessica Combs. Nicole Hagerty’s single through the right side allowed Tenuto to round third and cross home plate for the lone run of the contest.

BU recorded its only hit of the game in the bottom of the second with Mandy Fernandez singling up the middle. The rookie advanced to second on an illegal pitch by Cukrov but Erica Casacci struck out to end the inning and strand Fernandez.

The Terriers had another opportunity to score in the bottom of the third inning after Chelsea O’Connor and Megan Volpano both walked. Emily Roesch got on base with a fielder’s choice putting O’Connor out at third. Amy Ekart flied out to right field to end the inning with two runners on base.

Stony Brook threatened to score in the top of the fourth inning with Tenuto singling up the middle and taking second base on a wild pitch. Another hit up the middle by Hagerty moved Tenuto to third while Hagerty advanced to second on the throw. But BU got out of the inning unscathed with Floetker striking out Lauren Kamachi and Roesch picking off a line drive to get the final out of the frame.

The Seawolves later had a runner in scoring position with one out in the top of the sixth before BU turned a double play to end the inning. The Terriers again got themselves out of a jam in the top of the seventh with Stony Brook’s first two batters reaching on singles. Suzanne Karath used a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third but BU’s defense clamped down and got the last two outs to keep the score at 1-0.

At their final at-bat, the Terriers came up empty for Stony Brook to take the 1-0 victory.

Due to inclement weather, the originally scheduled doubleheader between BU and Stony Brook has been moved to Sunday. The Terriers and the Seawolves will complete the three-game series with a pair of contests tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at the BU Softball Field.
