KINGSTON, R.I. - Highlighted by a 3.5-second victory in the varsity eight race, the Boston University women's rowing team opened the Rhode Island Invitational on Saturday morning. Winning a total of three races, the Terriers faced the host Rams, Central Florida and Alabama.
Coxed by senior Kayla Rivers and stroked by classmate Cheryl Copson, the Terriers' varsity eight boat posted a time of 6:56.2 with Rhode Island finishing second at 6:59.7. UCF (7:04.9) and Alabama (7:18.3) took third and fourth, respectively.
The Terriers also picked up wins in the varsity four and third varsity eight contests. Coxed by freshman Eline Vermeulen and stroked by sophomore Kerry Kennedy, the V4 boat recorded a winning time of 7:54.2 with UCF 4.5 seconds behind.
Freshman coxswain Katie Scott and Carol Chase Peterson from the stroke seat guided the Terriers' 3V8 boat to a dominating 11.8 second win over Central Florida at 7:17.3.
The second varsity eight took third at 7:16.0 with UCF finishing 4.8 seconds behind. URI earned its lone win at 7:07.7.
The schools will race again on Sunday (April 15), starting at 7 a.m.
