CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Boston University softball team used four home runs to earn a 6-4 victory over Boston College Thursday afternoon in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The victory gives BU its 30th win of the season, as the Terriers improved to 30-13 overall.
The win also gives BU a season sweep of rival BC, as the Terriers defeated the Eagles, 1-0, on March 22.
Sophomore Brittany Clendenny led the team with three hits, including a pair of home runs. The Terriers also received home runs from freshman Mandy Fernandez and senior Melanie Delgado.
Sophomore Holli Floetker pitched the first two innings for the Terriers, giving up one run and one hit before junior Whitney Tuthill took over in the third inning. The junior gave allowed three runs off of three hits while striking out three batters.
Boston College scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. Nicole D’Argento walked to start the inning then moved over to second base on a wild pitch. Rene Delagrammaticas then grounded out to second base to move the runner to third and a single by Andrea Filler allowed D’Argento to score.
Jayme Mask got on base in the third inning with a single that fell in right field before Clendenny stepped up to knock a two-run homer to center field. Erica Casacci and Chelsea O’Connor got on base with back-to-back walks but Kehr struck out looking to leave both runners on base.
Tuthill entered the game in the bottom of the third inning and gave up a home run to Filler to tie the game at 2-2. Brittany Wilkins walked and Ali Lynette-Krech singled through the right side to put two on base. A double steal advanced the runners to second and third before a fielder’s choice by CJ Chirichigno drove another run home. BC added another run with a sacrifice bunt from Tory Speer to take a 4-2 lead after three innings.
Fernandez gave BU another run in the top of the fourth with a homer to centerfield with one out before BC switched pitchers. D’Argento and the Eagles retired the next two batters to end the inning.
The Terriers threatened to score in the fifth as Clendenny started off with a double to center field. Casacci used a sacrifice bunt to move Clendenny to third. Megan Volpano reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on the throw as Clendenny was tagged out trying to go home. O’Connor ended the at-bat with a fly out, leaving the tying run on base.
BU regained the lead in the top of the sixth, as Chelsea Kehr got it started by walking. Freshman Kendra Meadows stepped in to pinch run for Kehr and Ekart got on base with a fielder’s choice that got Meadows out at second. Delgado then hit her first homer of the season to left field to drive in two runs and give BU a 5-4 lead.
Clendenny hit her second homer of the game in the seventh inning to give the Terriers a 6-4 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Eagles loaded the bases with two outs in attempt to execute the comeback, but a final pop out by D’Argento ended the game and gave the Terriers a 6-4 victory.
BU plays its final home games of the regular season this weekend when the Terriers host the Hartford Hawks at the BU Softball Field for a three game series. BU and Hartford will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 28, beginning at 1 p.m. then wrap up the series with a single game Sunday, April 29, at 12 p.m.
