PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Boston University men's and women's track & field teams both competed at the Brown Springtime Open on Sunday afternoon.
On the women's side, senior Shelby Walton sprinted to a first-place time of 11.93 seconds in the 100m dash. She also placed fourth in the long jump (5.19m). Freshman Gemma Acheampong was sixth in the 100m dash, finishing with a time of 12.49 seconds.
Senior Mariko Takahashi was fourth in the 800m run (2:12.80), while juniors Allison Barwise (14.75) and Julia Mirochnick (14.90) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100m hurdles. Sophomore Carolyn Maynard (26.31) and freshman Amber Muhammed (26.60) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200m dash.
The Terriers got two strong performances in the relays, as the team of Acheampong, Maynard, Mirochnick and Walton placed second in the 4x100m relay with a time of 48.13 seconds. Muhammed, Mirochnick, Maynard and junior Nikki Long also had a second-place showing, as that quartet finished the 4x400m relay with a time of 3:59.52.
In the field events, sophomore Alex Tomasi placed fourth in the high jump (1.48m), while sophomore Betsy Bartlett and senior Alyson Rofrano each had a mark of 3.05m in the pole vault, good for ninth place. Sophomore Chelsea Curry came in fifth place in the shot put (12.85m). Her classmate, Sarah Dillard, was eighth in the discus (38.08m), while junior Susan Ottey was 10th in the hammer throw (41.86m).
On the men's side, sophomore Rich Peters posted a victory in the 800m run, as he crossed the finish line with a time of 1:51.31. Junior Stephen Vitale, fresh off a strong showing at the Penn Relays, finished fourth in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.19 seconds. Also on the track, senior Matt Pereira finished seventh in the 100m dash (11.24) and 10th in the 200m dash (23.33).
In field events, sophomore Connor Sullivan placed second in the high jump with a personal-best and mark of 2.06m, which also ranks as the top mark in the conference for the outdoor season. Junior Sam Wuest finished fourth in the high jump with a mark of 1.96m.
Senior Jeff Pelage had a personal-best throw of 51.64m in the discus and also placed 11th in the shot put (14.39m). Freshman Ethan Knight had an 11th-place finish in the discus (43.03m) and a 12th-place mark in the shot put (14.14m).
Sam Arsenault placed third in the long jump, as the senior turned in a leap of 6.44m. His classmate, Nicholas Kreutzjans, was seventh in that event with a mark of 5.83m. Junior Adam Weaver was fourth in the pole vault (4.05m), while senior Michael Murowchick was fourth in the javelin with a personal-best mark of 57.16m. Freshman Michael Maloof finished 10th in the hammer throw (48.48m).
BU will be back in action on May 5 and 6 at the America East Championships in Bangor, Maine.
