CAMDEN, N.J. - Highlighted by victories over the Patriot League and Atlantic 10 champions, the Boston University women's rowing team concluded the Eastern Sprints with a total of three medals Sunday afternoon on the Cooper River.
BU competed against 11 other schools, including four conference champions with No. 2 Virginia (ACC) in attendance. The 12 squads were split up into two morning heats with the top three boats in each race advancing to the Grand Final with the bottom three being sent to the Petite Final.
The Terriers garnered a silver in the third varsity eight along with bronze medals in the varsity eight and varsity four races to finish third overall in the team standings. The Cavaliers captured the Amm Trophy with 144 points. Northeastern edged BU, 107-92, to take second with Rhode Island (90), Navy (79) and Bucknell (75) rounding out the top six.
Coxed by senior Kayla Rivers and stroked by classmate Cheryl Copson, the V8 boat took second in its morning heat, finishing 1.7 seconds ahead of MIT and a comfortable seven seconds ahead of Buffalo to reach the Grand Final.
The Cavaliers claimed the gold later in the afternoon with a time of 6:14.810, 10 seconds ahead of CAA champion Northeastern (6:28.553). BU placed third at 6:28.553 with Patriot League champion Bucknell finishing fourth at 6:32.841. MIT (6:39.494) and Navy (6:44.413) took fifth and sixth, respectively, while Atlantic 10 champion Rhode Island won the Petite Final at 6:34.616.
After placing second in its heat to Northeastern by 3.3 seconds, the Terriers' 3V8 boat coxed by freshman Katie Scott and stroked by classmate Carol Chase Peterson rebounded with a 3.4 second win over the Huskies to grab the silver in the Grand Final. Virginia finished ahead of BU by 7.1 seconds with a time of 6:58.515 to capture the gold.
BU's V4 boat coxed by freshman Eline Vermeulen and stroked by sophomore Kerry Kennedy missed out on a silver by 0.6 seconds to UMass (7:32.547), as Virginia took first at 7:17.061. The Terriers though placed ahead of Buffalo's CAA champion boat by 10.5 seconds in the Grand Final.
Two other crews competed for the Terriers with the 2V8 placing third in the Petite Final for ninth place overall. The V4'b' race went straight to a Grand Final, and BU took fourth, missing out on the bronze by eight seconds.
