ORONO, Maine - Senior Jenelle Kohanchuk scored twice and four different skaters lit the lamp as the No. 5/6 Boston University women's ice hockey team defeated Maine, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena.
BU (13-3-3, 8-2-1 WHEA) extended its unbeaten streak to eight games with its second win over Maine (3-16-1, 1-9-0 WHEA) this season. Along with Kohanchuk (2g, 1a), the line of junior Louise Warren (1g, 1a), senior Isabel Menard (1g, 1a) and sophomore Kayla Tutino (2a) all had multiple-point afternoons.
Junior co-captain Marie-Philip Poulin also scored for the Terriers and three other skaters each added one assist en route to the win. Junior goaltender Kerrin Sperry was sharp between the pipes, as she made 21 saves for her 11th victory of the season.
Poulin almost scored first for the Terriers about 6:30 into the proceedings when she earned a breakaway chance on Maine goaltender Brittany Ott. After a tremendous move at the top of the crease, Poulin had an open net until Ott reached her paddle across the goalmouth and kept the puck out of the net.
It was Kohanchuk who eventually opened the Terriers' account thanks to a great individual effort at the 12:28 mark of the opening frame. She collected the puck in the neutral zone before flipping the puck off of the half-wall to herself. She then cut from left to right before slotting the puck past Ott for her team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Warren made it a 2-0 lead just 33 seconds later after a nifty pass from Menard. Tutino began the play and got it to Menard, who skated behind the net and slid the puck to Warren for the finish on the doorstep. It was Warren's seventh goal of the year.
That trio combined to score again 1:21 into the second stanza. Warren began the rush on the right wing and passed the puck to Tutino in the slot. She laid the puck perfectly for Menard, who whipped a wrist shot past Ott for her eighth goal of the season.
The Terriers capitalized on their second power play chance of the game at the 14:24 mark of the period. Poulin initiated the rush with a pass to Lefort on the right wing. As she entered the offensive zone, her cross-ice pass landed on Kohanchuk's stick. The ensuing shot nearly trickled in, and after a scrum in front of the net Poulin poked it home for her 10th goal of the season.
Brittany Dougherty got Maine on the board with 1:11 remaining in the middle period when she forced a turnover at her own blue line and raced the length of the ice to score on a breakaway.
Kohanchuk scored her second goal of the game on the power play at 12:52 of the final frame. Junior Shannon Doyle got the puck to senior co-captain Jill Cardella at the left half-wall. She then found Kohanchuk in the right circle for the one-timer.
Maine added a power play goal with 4:04 remaining in regulation when Jennifer More tipped in a shot, but that was the last of the scoring for either team.
The two squads will conclude the weekend series on Sunday afternoon when they drop the puck at 3 p.m.
