BOSTON - After scoring a season-high 25 points to help the Boston University men's basketball team earn an 83-77 win at Maryland, senior D.J. Irving has received BU's first-ever Lou Henson National Player of the Week award, CollegeInsider.com announced Monday afternoon.

A native of Chester, Pa., Irving was plagued by foul trouble the entire game and only played 22 minutes, the fewest since the ninth game of his rookie season. Still, the guard went 7-of-11, including 4-of-5 from the field, and added two steals.

Named to the Lou Henson Preseason All-America team, he posted 15 points in the first half to give the Terriers a 42-32 halftime lead. In the second, he drained a 3-pointer and later went 7-of-10 from the charity stripe to seal BU's second victory in three seasons against the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Irving currently ranks No. 15 all-time at BU with 1,191 points and has now posted 20 or more points in three of the last five games.

The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top mid-major player in Division I college basketball.

The award is named in honor of Lou Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.
