BOSTON - Hosting its first weekend series of the season, the Boston University softball team earned a doubleheader sweep against UMBC with an 8-0 run-rule victory and 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon at the BU Softball Field.

After swiping a program-record seven stolen bases in the first contest and recording a combined 14 hits, the Terriers improve to 13-20-1 and 4-4 in America East play.

Senior Whitney Tuthill (10-11) allowed just one hit in a combined six innings of work while striking out five batters to pick up the win in the first game and a one-inning save in the second. Freshman Lauren Hynes (2-4) went six innings and battled through four walks and four hits to hold the Retrievers (8-30, 1-9 AE) to one run.

On the offensive end, junior Jayme Mask tallied a combined six stolen bases, including a school-record four swipes in the first game, and finished with three hits. Junior Amy Ekart also had a team-high three hits, highlighted by a two-run homer in the fourth inning of the first contest.

The Terriers jumped out a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first off two hits. After picking up two quick outs, UMBC's Rachel Ionata (1-7) walked both junior Megan Volpano and Ekart. Senior Emily Roesch then plated Volpano with an infield single, and junior Brittany Clendenny followed up with a two RBI double to the right-center field gap.

Mask gave BU its fourth run in the second inning when she walked, stole second, moved to third on a defensive error and scored on Ekart's infield single. The Terriers left two on base in the third but came back with three more runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Hynes and two-run blast to left by Ekart.

Having already reached home plate twice, Mask ended the game in the bottom of the fifth by hitting a bunt single, stealing second and advancing twice on wild pitches. With the game finishing early, Tuthill just needed a total of 57 pitches to claim her third shutout of the season.

UMBC came out attacking in the second game against Hynes. With two outs, the Retrievers drew a walk and followed with back-to-back singles to grab a 1-0 lead. Playing at short, Clendenny helped BU stop the damage by diving toward second to stop a hard grounder and touch the bag with an open hand for the force out.

The Terriers came back to tie the game in the second inning behind two hits. Roesch and Clendenny opened with back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position after a successful sacrifice bunt by King. Junior Chelsea Kehr then drove home Roesch on an infield grounder.

The Retrievers would strand two runners on base in the fourth and sixth innings against Hynes, as the defense made several impressive plays. Clendenny again got the force out at second to end the fourth, and Roesch picked up a grounder with runners at the corners before tossing it to first. Sophomore Emily Felbaum had an over-the-shoulder catch out in left in the fifth inning, and Volpano recorded multiple outs as well at third.

BU scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the fifth. Kehr led off with a single to left and advanced to second while with the outfielder misplayed the ball. Sophomore pinch runner Kendra Meadows replaced Kehr and moved to third after a sacrifice bunt by Felbaum. Mask then put the ball on play with a soft grounder toward third, allowing Meadows to reach home.

Holding a slim 2-1 lead entering the top of the seventh, Tuthill entered the game for Hynes and retired the side for her first save of the season.

The Terriers will next host UMBC in the rubber match on Sunday (April 14) at 12 p.m.
