BOSTON - Opening a six-game homestand, the Boston University softball team dropped two contests to America East foe Albany on Wednesday afternoon at the BU Softball Field. Avenging last year's 5-0 conference title game loss, the Great Danes (30-10, 13-1 AE) followed up an 8-0 win with a 3-0 victory against the Terriers (17-22-1, 5-6 AE).

Both juniors Chelsea Kehr and Jayme Mask led BU with two hits apiece, while classmate Brittany Clendenny had a double. Recording four strikeouts against one walk, senior Whitney Tuthill (13-12) held Albany scoreless through the first three innings in the first game before allowing a combined five runs (one unearned) in the fourth and fifth innings. Freshman Lauren Hynes (3-5) went the distance in the second contest, allowing four hits, three runs (one unearned), and three walks while striking out six batters.

The story of the day was the performance of reigning America East Pitcher of the Week Brittany MacFawn. Last week, she went 6-0 in six appearances while recording a 0.21 ERA and tallying 40 strikeouts in 33 innings. Throwing in the low 60s, she continued her dominance against the Terriers and helped Albany become the first team since Louisiana Lafayette in 2003 to claim a doubleheader shutout sweep over BU.

In a combined 13 innings of work, she allowed six hits and walked one batter while tallying 21 strikeouts, as Albany blanked the Terriers two times in one season for the first time since 2008.

Seeing their six-game win streak snapped, BU had Clendenny in scoring position in the second inning of the first game following her double with two outs, but MacFawn got out of the jam with a strikeout.

The Great Danes led off the third with a double and error and moved both runners after a grounder. BU prevented any damage though with junior Megan Volpano playing in at third and throwing home for the tag out by junior catcher Amy Ekart on a routine grounder. Tuthill then recorded the final out by inducing an infield pop up.

Albany scored two runs in the fourth off a hit, a walk and defensive error to take the lead for good.

In the second game, the Great Danes took the lead again in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to right. They added two more runs in the sixth off two hits for insurance.

Following the doubleheader, BU will return to action at home on Thursday (April 25) against Bryant. The Terriers won the first meeting on the road, 8-6, back on April 16. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
