BOSTON - Concluding a four-game season-opening trip, the Boston University men's basketball will resume a long-time rivalry at New Hampshire on Tuesday night with action slated for 7 p.m.
Both the Terriers (1-2) and the Wildcats (1-2) are coming off road losses, as they resume a series that dates back to 1908-09. The teams did not play last season for the first time since 1956-57, as BU transitioned to the Patriot League.
The Terriers lead the all-time series, 96-38, and won the last two meetings in 2012-13 after BU and UNH recorded 1-1 splits the previous two seasons.
On Friday, BU dropped a hard-fought 89-65 decision at No. 1 Kentucky. The Wildcats led 46-44 at 16:20 and later 65-57 with 8:30 remaining before pulling away. Led by sophomore Cedric Hankerson's career-high 24 points, the Terriers finished just three points shy of the combined offensive production of then-No. 5 Kansas (72-40) and Montana State (86-28), who also battled UK last week.
UK entered the match-up owning a positive rebound margin of 18.0 but only came away with five more than the resilient Terriers. Through three games, junior Nathan Dieudonne leads BU in rebounding at 8.0 rpg while also averaging 8.7 ppg. Hankerson leads the squad in both points (18.3 ppg) and assists (4.3 apg), while freshman Cheddi Mosely (10.3 ppg) and junior John Papale (10.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg) are also scoring in double figures.
Nearly half of BU's made field goals are from behind the arc (26-of-62) with the Terriers shooting 40.5 percent in 3-point territory. They will face a UNH squad that is limiting opponents to 22.3 percent. The Wildcats opened the season with a 58-50 loss at Boston College and followed up with an 84-36 victory over Thomas College before dropping a 72-63 decision at Bryant. UNH trailed by 24 points in the first half to Bryant and rallied to grab a one-point lead (61-60) late in the second half. The Bulldogs though responded with another run for the victory.
Through three games, the Wildcats have two players averaging double figures in 6-foot-6 forward Tanner Leissner (11.3 ppg) and 6-foot-4 guard Jaleen Smith (11.0 ppg). Smith also leads UNH in both rebounding (6.0 rpg) and steals (2.0 spg), while 6-foot-0 guard Daniel Dion averages a team-high 3.7 assists per game with 5.0 rpg and 8.3 ppg.
The Wildcats mark the first of three straight America East opponents for BU. The Terriers will next welcome UMass Lowell for the second consecutive season to Case Gym. The home opener is scheduled for Sunday (Nov. 30) at 1 p.m.
