BOSTON - Highlighted by a season-high 14 steals and 43 rebounds, the Boston University men's basketball team concluded the non-conference schedule with a 69-46 victory over Wentworth at Case Gym on Monday night. Holding its first opponent below 50 points this season, the Terriers improve to 4-7, while the Leopards (4-5) see their four-game win streak snapped.
BU's leading scorer Cedric Hankerson (19.0 ppg) was dressed but did not see any action, as 11 of his teammates played at least 10 minutes apiece. Junior Nathan Dieudonne was one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine boards, while sophomore Eric Fanning tallied a game-high 15 points and six rebounds. Junior Justin Alston hauled in a career-high nine rebounds, and sophomore Cameron Curry earned a career-high three steals with seven points to help lead the defensive effort.
The Leopards did not feature a single scorer in double-figures with Ian Therriault and Matthew Dean tallying six points apiece. John Michael Fragnoli had a block and a team-high five rebounds. Wentworth finished the contest 17-of-49 (.347) and was outscored in points off turnovers, 24-7.
Fragnoli tied the game (7-7) at 15:26 in the first half with a jumper from the side after Therriault's 3-pointer, but Fanning keyed a 7-0 spurt by hitting one of his two 3-pointers and a layup to give BU the lead for good.
Papale drained three baskets from behind the arc and gave BU its largest lead of the half at 5:13 (34-16). The Leopards scored the final nine points though to pull within 34-25 entering the locker room.
The Terriers' defense stepped up in the second half, limiting Wentworth to just eight points in the first 14 minutes. Leading 40-30 with 14:04 left, BU went on a 24-3 run capped by Papale's 3-pointer and freshman Nick Havener's two free throws at 6:47.
BU finished the contest 17-of-49 (.347), including 7-of-24 (.292) in 3-point territory, and outscored the Leopards in the paint, 26-16.
Having won its first-ever meeting with Wentworth, the Terriers will next begin defense of its Patriot League regular season title at Holy Cross on Wednesday (Dec. 31) with tip-off slated for 2 p.m.
