LOWELL, Mass. - Allowing just two hits for the second consecutive game, the Boston University softball team rolled to a 9-1 victory at UMass Lowell on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Terriers improve to 21-18, while the River Hawks fall to 8-26.
Making her first start since March 8 due to injury, sophomore Melanie Russell (4-3) went the distance for her first complete-game victory of the season. She retired the first 10 batters before allowing back-to-back doubles and then settled down, finishing with six strikeouts against zero walks.
Highlighted by freshman Gabi Martinez's sixth-inning two-RBI double down the left field line, nine Terriers combined for 10 hits. BU took the lead for good in the third when senior Jayme Mask scored from third on a grounder by freshman Brittany Younan. Senior Clendenny followed up with a double to plate Younan for the 2-1 lead.
After the River Hawks cut the deficit to one in the fourth, the Terriers pulled away in the sixth behind four runs off two hits. With two outs, junior Emily Felbaum drew a walk, and senior Amy Ekart was hit by a pitch. Martinez then hit the bases-clearing double before scoring on Mask's single up the middle. Mask added the fourth run when freshman Moriah Connolly stole second.
In the seventh, Felbaum extended the lead with a two-RBI double. She would score the ninth and final run on Ekart's single up the middle.
The Terriers will next resume the Patriot League schedule on Saturday (April 19) at Colgate with the first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 12 p.m.
