BOSTON - Sophomore Lauren Hynes pitched a three-hit gem and senior Brittany Clendenny delivered the crushing blow with a two-RBI single in the sixth inning to help the Boston University softball team earn a 3-1 home win over Connecticut on Wednesday afternoon.
The Terriers improve to 17-12 after hosting the Huskies (7-21) in their home opener. The victory marked BU's first of the season when the team trailed after the fifth inning.
Hynes (10-8) went the distance for the second consecutive game and seventh overall by limiting UConn to just three hits and an unearned run. Lauren Duggan (5-11) pitched five scoreless innings for the Huskies before allowing all three BU runs off four hits during the sixth.
Senior Jayme Mask led the Terriers with three hits, while freshman Moriah Connolly tallied two of her own. Both women scored on Clendenny's single after freshman Brittany Younan plated Hynes' pinch-runner (junior Kendra Meadows) on her second hit of the day.
The Terriers had several chances to add more runs and left the bases loaded in the first, second and fourth innings. UConn took the 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when a BU infield error allowed Maddy Schiappa to reach home from second.
On the next at-bat with a runner at third, Lexiss Gifford lifted the ball to right field. Mask caught it and quickly threw home to senior Amy Ekart, who applied the tag on Audrey Grinnell.
With the bases loaded in the bottom half, Clendenny hit a rocket, but the shortstop Gifford made an impressive dive with her glove to stop the ball dead in its tracks and throw it over to second for the third out.
BU had the bases loaded for the fourth time in the sixth inning. Hynes reached first on an error to lead off. The Terriers then hit four consecutive singles behind the bats of Connolly, Mask, Younan and Clendenny to grab the lead for good.
Hynes retired the side in the seventh and finished the game by earning her sixth strikeout of the contest.
The Terriers will return to action at Boston College on Thursday (April 3) at 4 p.m. They will then host Lehigh for a three-game series starting Saturday (April 5) at 12 p.m.
