HAMILTON, N.Y. - Earning the program's first Patriot League weekend series sweep, the Boston University softball team claimed a 7-2 victory at Colgate on Sunday afternoon. With the team's fifth-straight win, the Terriers improve to 24-18 and 8-4 in conference action, while the Raiders drop to 9-24 (2-10 PL).
Down by two in the top of the sixth, BU scored three runs, including two on a game-changing double by junior Emily Felbaum. The Terriers added four more in the seventh to pull away.
Pitching the final five innings, sophomore Melanie Russell (6-3) limited Colgate to two runs off four hits while posting six strikeouts against one walk.
Colgate grabbed the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth behind a two-out two-run homer by Haley Fleming. The Terriers responded in the sixth with three runs off three hits and two Raider errors.
Senior Jayme Mask hit a lead-off single and advanced to third after a stolen base and error. Senior Chelsea Kehr then plated Mask with a two-out RBI single through the left side. After junior Mandy Fernandez reached base on an error, Felbaum hit the bases-clearing double to right center.
In the seventh, freshman Brittany Younan and senior Brittany Clendenny added RBI singles to push the lead to 5-2. The two later scored on a Colgate error and wild pitch.
BU will next return home and host Rhode Island on Tuesday (April 22) at 3 p.m.
