BOSTON - Highlighted by two-RBI hits from senior Brittany Clendenny and sophomore Lauren Hynes, the Boston University softball team started a six-game homestand with a 7-4 win over Rhode Island on Tuesday afternoon. With their sixth straight victory, the Terriers improve to 25-18, while the Rams fall to 11-29.
Freshman Makinna Akers (6-2) went six innings and limited the Rams to three earned runs off six hits while tallying two strikeouts. Six of her teammates finished with at least two hits to help BU out-hit the Rams, 14-8.
Finishing 2-of-4, senior Brittany Clendenny gave BU the lead for good with a two-run blast over the right field fence to plate classmate Jayme Mask. After back-to-back singles from senior Chelsea Kehr and junior Emily Felbaum, sophomore Lauren Hynes extended the lead to 4-0 with a two-RBI single up the middle.
BU added two more runs in the bottom of the second off RBI hits from Clendenny and Kehr. URI got on the board in the fifth with three straight two-out singles, but Hynes came back with an RBI double in the bottom half.
Trailing 7-1 in the top of the seventh, the Rams added three runs off three hits and an error to cut the final deficit to three runs.
Both Clendenny and Hynes ended the game with three RBIs apiece to lead the Terriers' offense, while Kehr had a team-high three hits and one RBI.
The Terriers will next host Harvard on Thursday (April 24) at 4 p.m. They will then resume the Patriot League schedule against Lafayette over the weekend at home.
