HANOVER, N.H. - Playing the first of two scheduled non-conference midweek games, the Boston University softball team dropped a 5-4 decision at Ivy League leader Dartmouth on Wednesday afternoon. Trailing by one in the bottom of the fourth, the Big Green scored four straight runs and held off a late rally to improve to 19-13, while the Terriers fell to 19-15.
Sophomore Lauren Hynes (12-11) allowed three earned runs off 10 hits and finished with two strikeouts against six walks for the loss. Dartmouth used three pitchers, who allowed a combined three earned runs off nine hits and posted six strikeouts against three walks. Alex Jarvis (2-1) collected the victory, and reigning Ivy League Player of the Week Morgan McCalmon recorded the save by earning an out on six of the Terriers' final seven at-bats.
Freshman Brittany Younan led all players with a game-high three hits, while senior Amy Ekart posted two hits and two runs scored. Freshman Gabi Martinez had a RBI single, and senior Brittany Clendenny added two RBIs.
Dartmouth took the early lead in the bottom of the first following a walk, single to left and an RBI single down the right field line. The Big Green loaded the bases, but Hynes induced a ground out to first to get out of the jam.
The Terriers opened the top of the third with singles by freshman Moriah Connolly and Clendenny, who both advanced an extra base due to a throwing error. Hynes earned a one-out walk to load the bases, but BU could not take advantage, finishing with two pop ups.
They would get on the board in the fourth however with two runs off three hits. Younan, Ekart and Martinez hit three consecutive singles to tie the game. Clendenny then gave BU the 2-1 advantage with a sacrifice fly to center.
Dartmouth responded with three runs off two hits, three walks and a costly error in the bottom half. Kristen Rumley went deep over the center field fence to tie the game. The Big Green then loaded the bases and hit a dribbler to second. BU muffed the throw at first, and Dartmouth took advantage by scoring two unearned runs.
The Big Green struck again in the bottom of the fifth with a two-out double and RBI single to extend the lead to 5-2. The Terriers quickly put pressure on the Big Green behind Younan's double and Ekart's single. Martinez loaded the bases with a walk and no outs.
McCalmon then appeared out of the pen for Dartmouth. She first got the force out at home and then gave up a RBI groundout to Clendenny. Senior Jayme Mask put the ball in play down the third base line, and Dartmouth mishandled the ball to allow BU to pull within 5-4.
In the seventh, after two strikeouts, junior Emily Felbaum hit a single to left to put the game-trying run on base. McCalmon though induced a grounder to the circle to become the first pitcher to get Younan out, as the game came to an end.
