HAMILTON, N.Y. - In an early battle for first place in the Patriot League standings, the Boston University men's basketball team dropped a 62-53 decision at Colgate on Wednesday night. With their eight-game conference road win streak snapped, the Terriers fall to 7-9 (3-2 PL), while the Raiders improve to 7-11 and 4-1 in conference play.
Freshman Cheddi Mosely and junior Justin Alston hit back-to-back baskets to give BU the 45-42 advantage with 7:51 remaining in regulation. The Raiders responded with a 12-0 run over the next five minutes and then went 6-of-8 from the line in the final 70 seconds to seal the victory.
The Terriers were limited to a season-low 53 points, as their top two scorers Cedric Hankerson and John Papale went a combined 1-of-13 from the field. Sophomore Eric Fanning came off the bench to contribute a team-high 15 points, while freshman Cheddi Mosely reached double figures for the second consecutive game with 13 points. Junior Nathan Dieudonne was the third in double figures at 10 points, as BU finished the game 19-of-51 (.373), including 5-of-18 (.278) from behind the arc.
Held to 26 points in the first half, Colgate shot 55 percent in the second half to gain sole possession of first place in the conference standings. Highlighted by five 3-pointers, Damon Sherman-Newsome led the charge with 13 of his game-high 19 points coming in the second half. Luke Roh and Ethan Jacobs contributed 13 and 10 points, respectively, while Matt McMullen hauled in a game-high 10 rebounds. The Raiders won the battle at the boards, 33-28, and posted five of their six blocks in the second half.
Mosely scored the Terriers' first eight points behind two treys and gave BU the early 8-5 lead at 14:44 on a jumper. On the following possession, Papale's steal led to Dieudonne's layup and made free throw. Fanning's layup at 9:32 gave the Terriers their largest lead of the game, 20-8.
The Raiders went on a 14-2 run over the next seven minutes and tied the game at 2:38 on McMullen's layup. Dieudonne's 3-pointer and two Fanning free throws in the final 90 seconds gave BU a 29-26 lead at the half.
The Terriers never led by more than three in the second half and trailed for the first time at 16:37 (35-33) after Sherman-Newsome's 3-pointer. Colgate's Pat Moore tied the game for the fifth and final time at 7:14 on a 3-pointer, and Austin Tillotson followed with a defensive rebound and layup to give the Raiders the lead for good with 6:45 remaining.
Looking to snap a two-game losing skid, BU will remain on the road and next travel to Loyola Maryland on Sunday (Jan. 18) for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
