BOSTON - Junior John Papale was one of three Terriers in double figures with a career-high 22 points, but the Boston University men's basketball team was unable to contain Bucknell's offense in a 92-77 loss Saturday afternoon in Agganis Arena.
With their fourth straight win, the Bison (11-10) remain atop the Patriot League standings with Colgate at 6-2, while the Terriers (8-11, 4-4 PL) drop two games back.
Papale drained a personal-best eight field goals on 13 attempts to top his previous high by two points. With his three 3-pointers, he moved past D.J. Irving ('14) and Matt Turner ('04) into ninth-place all-time at BU in career treys at 173. Both sophomore Cedric Hankerson and junior Nathan Dieudonne finished with 15 points, as BU ended the contest 24-of-57 (.421) and 4-of-15 (.267) in 3-point range.
In Wednesday's win over preseason favorite American, Hankerson helped BU force 13 turnovers behind a school-record nine steals. Bucknell took care of the ball against the Terriers with just seven miscues and had seven men tally at least eight points with Chris Hass posting a game-high 28 points behind six 3-pointers. Stephen Brown also reached double figures at 15 points, while Nana Foulland hauled in seven boards with his eight points.
Bucknell jumped out scoring 10 of the game's first 11 points and extended the lead to 13 (25-12) at 10:56 on J.C. Show's 3-pointer. Ignited by Papale's trey, the Terriers fought back with a 19-4 run capped by Dieudonne's dunk at 3:55.
The teams exchanged baskets the rest of the half with Hass giving Bucknell the 42-40 lead seconds before the buzzer. To open the second, junior Justin Alston tied the game for the sixth and final time on a pair of free throws at 19:35.
The Bison responded with Cory Starkey feeding Foulland for a slam dunk and lead that Bucknell would never relinquish. Hass had the Terriers trailing, 60-47, on a pair of free throws at 14:42 before BU again mounted a rally.
After draining a 3-pointer to bring the Terriers within 60-57 at 11:53, Papale later drained a jumper at 10:16 to put the deficit at 65-61. BU would never get any closer, as Hass ignited a 10-2 run to help Bucknell pull away.
As a team, the Bison shot 69.6 percent in the second half to finish the game 32-of-57 (.561), including a stifling 13-of-20 (.650) from 3-point range. Bucknell was also impressive at the free throw line, hitting 15 of 16 (.938) attempts.
The Terriers will next end the first go-round with the Patriot League at Army on Thursday (Jan. 29) at 7 p.m.
