BOSTON - Currently riding a three-game win streak, the defending Patriot League regular season champion Boston University men's basketball team will visit Navy on Wednesday night with the American Sports Network and NESN broadcast set for 8 p.m.
The Terriers (6-7, 2-0 PL) and Midshipmen (6-8, 2-0 PL) are two of three squads in the Patriot League alongside Colgate with an unblemished conference record. Both BU and Navy enter the contest having won four of their last five games.
TERRIER TIDBITS
• BU is 2-4 on the road this season with a 71-63 win at Norfolk State and 75-72 overtime victory at Holy Cross. • Named one of the nation's top 20 breakout stars by ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman, sophomore Cedric Hankerson is averaging 18.7 ppg and is on pace to set a program record for biggest jump in scoring from one season to the next after averaging 6.0 ppg last season ... BU Hall of Famer Dredrick Irving ('88) went from 6.4 ppg to 18.0 ppg as a sophomore.
• The Terriers rank 25th nationally in made 3-pointers per game at 8.5 ... Freshman Cheddi Mosely drained a personal-best five treys ... Junior John Papale has 164 career 3-pointers, six shy of tying for 10th all-time at BU ... Hankerson though leads the team with 36 bombs this season and an impressive 43.6 percent shooting percentage.
• Junior Nathan Dieudonne remains in second in rebounding in the PL at 7.6 rpg ... He owns three double-doubles this season with his first ever in the PL coming at Holy Cross ... All four career double-doubles have occurred on the road.
• The bench is 4-1 when outscoring the opponent's bench and is 1-5 when being outscored ... Sophomore Eric Fanning is the top scorer at 9.5 ppg ... He tallied a career high 21 points and six assists in just 22 minutes against Lehigh.
• Junior Justin Alston is coming off a stellar week in which he averaged 8.3 ppg, 8.7 rpg and 2.3 bpg in three wins ... He tied a career-high with 17 points at Holy Cross and posted a personal-best nine rebounds against Wentworth and Lehigh ... Also earned seven of his 11 blocks last week.
• Before the current win streak, opponents were averaging 71.8 ppg and shooting 47.2 FG% ... Last week, BU limited the three opponents to 58.0 ppg and 35.6 FG%.
SCOUTING NAVY
• The Midshipmen opened the conference schedule with a dominating 70-47 victory over Loyola Maryland and then a gritty 69-65 win at Lafayette ... Navy is 2-0 to start league play since 2009-10.
• Senior 6-foot-6 forward Worth Smith was named PL Player of the Week on Monday for the second consecutive week ... He is averaging 19.3 ppg and 8.7 rpg in the last three games after only appearing in one game through the first 11 contests ... Last season, Smith went a combined 3-of-20 against BU.
• Senior 6-foot-0 guard Brandon Venturini is averaging 11.9 ppg on the season ... He had 16 points, six rebounds and career-high five steals at Lafayette.
• Navy is 4-3 at home this season ... Opened season with a tough 64-59 loss to then-No. 18 Michigan State.
• The Midshipmen are averaging 60.6 ppg and shooting 43.6 FG% while holding opponents to 65.6 ppg and 45.2 FG%.
SERIES HISTORY
• The Terriers are 4-0 all-time in the series after claiming a sweep last season.
• BU won the first-ever meeting during the Round of 16 at the 1959 NCAA tournament in overtime, 62-58.
• The Terriers return just 28 points and 14 of the 40 recorded rebounds from last season's 61-48 win at Navy.
UP NEXT
• After hosting six home games in Case Gym, the Terriers move to Agganis Arena for the rest of the regular season ... They tip off the eight-game home slate against Lafayette on Saturday (Jan. 10) at 1 p.m.
• BU won all three meetings last season, including the Patriot League quarterfinals ... This year though, Lafayette was picked No. 4 in the PL preseason poll, two spots ahead of the Terriers.
