ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Highlighted by junior Nathan Dieudonne's fourth double-double and sophomore Cedric Hankerson's 21 points, the Boston University men's basketball team extended its win streak to four games with a 70-64 victory at Navy on Wednesday night.
Snapping Navy's (6-9, 2-1 PL) three-game win streak, the Terriers (7-7, 3-0 PL) move to .500 for the first time this season since opening the year 1-1.
Hankerson tied a season high in made 3-pointers with five, as three other teammates finished in double figures. Dieudonne posted 14 points and 12 rebounds, and sophomore Eric Fanning tallied all 11 of his points off the bench in the second half. For the second time in three games, junior Justin Alston tied his career high with 17 points while adding six rebounds.
Reigning back-to-back PL Player of the Week Worth Smith led the Midshipmen with 25 points and nine rebounds. Brandon Venturini added 14 points, six assists and three steals, while Tilman Dunbar dished out nine assists.
The Midshipmen jumped out to an early 10-5 lead capped by Edward Alade's dunk at 15:41 and matched its largest advantage at 12:04 (18-13) on Venturini's first of four 3-pointers. Hankerson tied the game (18-18) three minutes later on a trey to push his point total to 13 points.
Alston then scored BU's final 12 points, as the Terriers went into the locker room ahead 30-25. Both teams shot under 36 percent during the first 20 minutes of action, but BU went an impressive 14-of-17 (.824) at the free throw line. The Midshipmen kept the game close by owning an 11-3 lead in second-chance points.
Smith opened the second half with a layup to cut the deficit to three points, but Navy would never get any closer, as Dieudonne responded with his first of three 3-pointers. Leading 45-40 with 13:43 left, BU went on a 19-4 run capped by Alston's layup at 6:20. During the stretch, Fanning scored seven points and Dieudonne added another 3-pointer.
Navy tried to mount a rally and pulled within 68-63 on Smith's 3-pointer at the 37-second mark, but Fanning sealed the win with two more free throws.
BU shot 57.1 percent in the second half to finish 18-of-38 (.474), including 11-of-20 (.550) from behind the arc. The Terriers were also strong at the line, going 23-of-29 (.793). Navy went 24-of-58 (.414) and 9-of-20 (.450), respectively, while just hitting seven of 13 (.538) free throw attempts.
Despite only having 10 points in the paint and three more turnovers (12-9), BU improved to 5-0 all-time against the Midshipmen. The squad is now just one of two unbeaten teams in the Patriot League alongside Colgate at 3-0.
The Terriers will next host their first of eight conference games at Agganis Arena against Lafayette on Saturday (Jan. 10). Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
