LEXINGTON, Ky. - Despite featuring four Terriers in double figures, the Boston University men's basketball team dropped an 82-62 decision at top-ranked Kentucky on Tuesday night in front of 22,623 fans.
Playing their first game as the No. 1 team in the country this season, the Wildcats (5-0) faced their latest deficit of the year at 32-31 with 3:40 remaining in the first half before finishing on a 9-1 spurt. The Terriers (2-3) later cut a 13-point deficit to eight at 8:39 in the second, but UK responded with an 18-2 run over the next six minutes to pull away for the victory.
Reigning Patriot League Player of the Week John Papale drained three 3-pointers to finish with a team-high 15 points, while fellow senior and 2012 Kentucky Mr. Basketball Nathan Dieudonne posted 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Freshman Kyle Foreman added 11 points and two steals, and sophomore Cheddi Mosely contributed 10 points.
Kentucky used its size and length to out-rebound the Terriers, 45-27, while also posting a 24-9 advantage in second-chance points and 58-16 lead in points in the paint. A preseason All-American, 6-foot-11 Skal Labissiere led the way by posting 16 points and seven rebounds with three blocks. 6-foot-8 Alex Poythress added 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Wooden and Bob Cousy Award Watch List member Tyler Ulis earned 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals.
The Wildcats seemingly looked to be on their way to a rout with a 10-0 start to the contest, but head coach Joe Jones' timeout at 17:16 helped settle down his squad. The two-time PL Rookie of the Week Foreman put BU on the board with a short jumper and added a 3-pointer to ignite a 9-0 run.
Labissiere pushed the lead up to 29-20 at 7:51, but the Terriers came charging back with a 7-0 spurt ended by Papale's 3-pointer with 5:42 left in the half. After junior Blaise Mbargorba went 1-of-2 at the charity stripe, BU forced Labissiere into a turnover, and Dieudonne fed the cutting Papale for the layup and 32-31 lead at 3:40.
UK responded with a 9-1 run, highlighted by three layups in the final 90 seconds, to enter the locker room ahead, 40-33. The Terriers stayed within striking distance behind five treys and a 11-9 lead in points off turnovers.
In the second half, Labissiere gave the Wildcats their largest lead (55-42) with 12:58 remaining on a free throw. BU dug in and used a 3-pointer by sophomore Nick Havener and layup by Dieudonne off a Foreman steal to cut the deficit to eight at 57-49 with 11:52 remaining.
Sophomore Will Goff kept the deficit at eight (64-56) at 8:39 on BU's eighth and final 3-pointer, but the Terriers would never get closer. UK's defense forced three turnovers, and BU missed its next seven shot attempts for the loss.
UK ended the game 33-of-64 (.516) from the field, while BU was held below 46 percent shooting for the first time this season at 20-of-54 (.370).
Having concluded the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic, the Terriers will next resume the five-game road trip at former America East foe Binghamton on Saturday (Nov. 28) at 4 p.m.
