NEW YORK - The Boston University men's ice hockey team continued its partnership with the nonprofit organization Ice Hockey in Harlem (IHIH) on Saturday when it visited New York's Central Park and practiced with the program's Pee Wee hockey players.
The Terriers, in New York for their Saturday night game vs. Cornell at Madison Square Garden, held a special hockey clinic for IHIH players at Lasker Rink in Central Park followed by a talk by BU head coach David Quinn about the importance of a college education. Mike Eruzione, captain of the famed "Miracle on Ice" USA hockey team and a former BU player, was also on hand to speak to the IHIH players and answer their questions.
At the conclusion of the program, the Terriers presented IHIH players with copies of the book "Eleven Seconds" written by former BU player Travis Roy. The books were donated to IHIH's after school reading program.
"Visiting Ice Hockey in Harlem was once again an incredible day for our coaching staff and players," said Boston University's director of athletics Drew Marrochello. "We are so grateful to IHIH's director John Sanful and the young people at IHIH for welcoming us back to Lasker Rink to be a part of their Saturday. IHIH is such an important program that stresses education and college readiness through athletics. We are thrilled to partner with such a great organization and look forward to it continuing."
The Terriers first visited the IHIH program during their last trip to New York City to play Cornell back in 2013. In February of 2015, IHIH players visited the BU campus for a college awareness tour and attended a home game at Agganis Arena.
Founded in 1987, Ice Hockey in Harlem is a nonprofit organization that works to improve the social and academic well being of children from the Harlem community through participation in ice hockey. IHIH uses the sport of hockey to engage students and improve their self-esteem, while also providing a safe after school alternative that improves their school attendance and grades. Since its founding, thousands of boys and girls from Harlem have taken part in the program. The organizations motto is "Education is our Goal" and requires each players to attend weekly classroom sessions as a condition for participation in the hockey program.
Last year, the program expanded its girls' program by entering the Lady Harlem U12 team in a league that competes in New Jersey, Long Island and its home at Lasker Rink in New York's Central Park.
