BOSTON - Despite junior Nathan Dieudonne earning his seventh career double-double and four Terriers reaching double figures, the Boston University men's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 76-69 decision to Patriot League co-leader Colgate on Wednesday night at Agganis Arena.
In a contest featuring 10 ties and 10 lead changes, Colgate (12-14, 9-4 PL) scored 10 of the game's final 14 points in the last 1:40 to complete the sweep against the Terriers (10-14, 6-7 PL) following an earlier 62-53 win in Hamilton, N.Y.
Sophomore Eric Fanning led BU with 19 points, as the Terriers finished the contest 22-of-46 (.478), including 7-of-21 (.333) from behind the arc. Junior Justin Alston tallied 14 points, while freshman Cheddi Mosely contributed 10 points. Dieudonne also posted 10 points as well as a game-high 10 rebounds.
Damon Sherman-Newsome drained four 3-pointers to match Fanning's 19 points, while Luke Roh had 15 points and eight boards. Ethan Jacobs tallied 12 points, including what proved to be the back-breaking trey that pushed a one-point lead to four with 50 seconds remaining in regulation. Colgate shot 55.6 percent in the final 20 minutes and outscored BU in points off turnovers, 18-7, to overcome a 13-point first-half deficit.
Neither team could get into a groove early on with both just hitting one basket apiece in the first four minutes of action. Sherman-Newsome pushed Colgate ahead, 12-10, at 11:37 on a 3-pointer, but junior John Papale responded with a short jumper to ignite a 19-4 run over the following seven minutes.
Mosely's 3-pointer gave BU its largest lead of the contest, 29-16, at 4:14. The Raiders though reeled off 11 straight points and drained a trey with three seconds left in the half to pull within three (33-30) entering the locker room. Sherman-Newsome started the second half with another bomb to tie the contest for the fifth time.
Leading 50-48 at 11:03, the Terriers hit three free throws over the next 80 seconds to earn its largest lead of the half, 53-48. Pat Moore drained a jumper from behind the arc to tie the game for the 10th and final time at 8:00.
Papale hit his second trey at 2:07 to give the Terriers their final lead, 65-64. On the ensuing possession, Sherman-Newsome went to the hoop for a layup. BU missed its next field goal attempt, and a foul on the rebound led to Colgate hitting two free throws. Fanning cut the deficit to one (68-67) at 1:17 on two free throws, leading to Jacobs' lone 3-pointer at the 50-second mark.
Trailing 72-69, Fanning's layup attempt bounced off the rim and into the hands of Matt McMullen with 17 seconds left in regulation. McMullen hit a pair of free throws and added two more after BU missed back-to-back 3-point attempts to seal the win.
The Terriers outscored Colgate in the paint, 30-26, and won the battle at the boards, 32-26. However, they were unable to overcome their 12 turnovers, as the Raiders finished with just six.
BU will next remain at Agganis Arena and host Loyola Maryland on Saturday (Feb. 14) with tip-off slated for 1 p.m. Both teams are currently in a three-way tie for fifth at 6-7 in conference play, three games behind the PL leaders, with five regular season matchups remaining.
