BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Boston University men's lacrosse team roared back in the second half to pull even with Lehigh, 9-9, late in the fourth quarter but the Mountain Hawks scored with 2:37 remaining in regulation to sneak past the Terriers, 10-9, on a snowy Saturday morning.
BU (2-1, 0-1 PL) trailed Lehigh (2-1, 1-0 PL) by a 6-2 score when the second half began, but the Terriers outscored the Mountain Hawks, 4-1, in the third quarter to cut the deficit to one at 7-6. Farris eventually tied the game, 9-9, with just under five minutes to play before Lehigh capitalized on an extra-man opportunity to secure the win. Freshman Hayden Ruiz had a good bid with less than a minute to play but Lehigh's matt Poillon made one of his 15 saves to salvage the full result.
The Terriers got two-goal games out of three freshmen as Greg Farris, Ryan Hilburn and Ruiz all found the back of the net on two separate occasions. Farris' goals were the first two of his collegiate career. Hilburn also added an assist for a three-point morning. Sophomore Cal Dearth had two points with a goal and an assist and was also terrific on the ground, scooping up six ground balls. Sophomore Greg Wozniak scored his second goal in as many games while redshirt sophomore Sam Tenney scored in the third straight game. Sophomore Adam Schaal had three helpers and also collected two ground balls.
Sophomore Sam Talkow was 13-of-22 at the faceoff X and BU won 48 ground balls to just 28 for Lehigh. The Terriers were held to single digits in goals for the first time this season and sophomore Christian Carson-Banister stopped eight shots.
BU and Lehigh were tied, 2-2, late in the first quarter before the Mountain Hawks recorded the next four markers to take a 6-2 lead into halftime. Tenney and Lehigh's Reid Weber traded goals to begin the third quarter before BU began its run. Hilburn and Ruiz made it a 7-5 game before Wozniak's heroics at the end of the quarter brought the Terriers within one. Wozniak gathered a ground ball near the BU cage and went coast-to-coast before firing a shot past Poillon with one second on the clock.
Lehigh scored the first two goals of the final 15 minutes, but BU rattled off three straight of its own to tie the game, 9-9. Farris had two of the three markers, with Ruiz recording the middle marker of the three-goal spurt. The Terriers had a possession with a chance to take the lead, but when Lehigh got the ball back the Terriers were whistled for a penalty. Lehigh converted on the ensuing extra-man chance to take the lead for good.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Terriers as they head to Providence on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
