LEWISBURG, Pa. - Competing in its final road game of the regular season, the Boston University men's basketball team dropped a 78-69 decision at Bucknell on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Terriers drop to 12-15 (8-8 PL) and into a tie for fourth in the standings with Lafayette, while the Bison (17-12, 12-4 PL)) solidify their hold on No. 1.
Sophomores Eric Fanning and Cedric Hankerson combined for 39 points and helped the Terriers finish 21-of-45 (.467) from the field. However, BU just went 19-of-31 (.613) at the line, while Bucknell shot 23-of-32 (.719) from the charity stripe and 24-of-52 (.462) overall to extend its win streak to five games.
After Fanning gave BU its final lead at 14:18 (9-8) in the first half, Bucknell reeled off 10 straight points over the following five minutes to take the lead for good. The Terriers cut the deficit to three (22-19) on Fanning's 3-pointer with 5:21 remaining but would never get any closer.
Hankerson had a strong all-around performance with 19 points and game highs in three other categories - rebounds (8), assists (4) and steals (3). He drained four of BU's eight 3-pointers, while Fanning had a pair to end the contest with 20 points. Junior Nathan Dieudonne was the third Terrier in double figures at 10 points.
For Bucknell, Chris Hass earned 16 of his 20 points in the first half to give the Bison a 38-28 halftime lead. Three-time PL Rookie of the Week Nana Foulland took over the offense in the second with 11 of his 17 points. Dom Hoffman nearly had a double double behind seven points and seven boards, while J.C. Show hit three of four 3-point attempts alongside Hass' four treys .
Leading 22-19, Ryan Frazier keyed a 7-0 spurt behind a pair of layups and steal that also included a Hass 3-pointer. The Terriers were down 32-21 at 2:59 following another Hass bomb and scored five straight points from the charity stripe over the following 80 seconds. Hass stayed on the attack by hitting a pair of free throws and hitting a layup to help the Bison enter the locker room ahead, 38-28.
After Dieudonne's layup at 17:02, Bucknell scored nine straight points to grab its first 20-point lead of the game at 53-33 with 13:21 remaining. Show drained the Bison's lone 3-pointer of the half one minute later to extend the lead to 21 (56-35).
The Terriers did not relent and continued to battle, cutting the deficit to 12 (60-48) at 7:51 on Hankerson's 3-pointer. Foulland responded with back-to-back layups to keep Bucknell in control of the contet with BU only cutting the deficit to single digits during the final 50 seconds of action.
The Bison outscored BU in the paint, 34-20, and had the better conversion rate in turnovers with a 17-9 point advantage despite just having one fewer miscue (10-9). Bucknell's bench also owned a 29-7 lead against the Terriers.
BU will next head home for the final pair of regular season home games. First, the Terriers will host Army on Wednesday (Feb. 25) with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
