CLEARWATER, Fla. - Highlighted by freshman Jilee Schanda's pair of two-RBI hits, the Boston University claimed a sweep over Long Island (11-3) and Seton Hall (4-2) on day two of the Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
With the six-inning run-rule victory over the Blackbirds (7-19), the Terriers (6-15) avenged last week's 10-7 10-inning defeat. BU jumped out with six runs in the first, and junior Lauren Hynes sealed the win by retiring the final five hitters after LIU pulled within four in the top of the fifth against sophomore Makinna Akers (3-3). Schanda had a team-high three RBIs along with two runs scored, while sophomore Brittany Younan tallied three runs.
Hynes (3-5) followed up her earlier performance by pitching a complete game against the Pirates (10-14), allowing just three hits and two unearned runs while recording three strikeouts against two walks. Schanda cut BU's deficit in half with a single and run scored in the fourthon senior Mandy Fernandez's RBI single. She then came up big in the fifth with a two-RBI double and run on sophomore Gabi Martinez's sacrifice fly.
LIU opened the first matchup with a single and eventually had two runners in scoring position with two outs. Nicole Archer plated one run with a single to center but couldn't get a second when sophomore Moriah Connolly made a strong throw home to help Martinez apply the tag on Victoria Zamora.
The bottom half was a wild one with all nine Terriers getting an at-bat and BU scoring six runs off four hits and three errors. Younan led with a single and took second on freshman Emma Wong's sacrifice bunt before scoring on Schanda's RBI single up the middle. Zamora committed three errors behind the plate, allowing BU to score three more runs. Senior Emily Felbaum and Connolly both plated a run for the 6-1 advantage.
With two outs in the fourth, Younan extended the lead to 7-1 by hitting a single, stealing second and scoring on Wong's double. LIU cut the deficit to four in the top of the fifth on a two-RBI double against Akers but would not earn another hit the rest of the contest.
BU put the game away in the sixth by first loading the bases. After a wild pitch allowed one run to score, Schanda delivered a two-RBI single to left. She later scored the final run on Fernande's RBI single for the run-rule victory.
Like the Blackbirds, Seton Hall got on the board first against the Terriers. BU though had an opportunity to strike first but stranded two runners after being unable to take advantage of two walks.
The Pirates had a sacrifice bunt in-between two singlesto put runners on the corners. They then sent Danielle Destaso toward second with one out, prompting an errant throw from home that putBU behind, 2-0. SHU again had runners on the corner in the fourth with one out, but Hynes prevented more damage by striking out Destaso and inducing an infield pop up.
BU began mounting its rally in the bottom half of the fourth with Schanda hitting a lead-off single. She moved to second after Hynes took first on catcher's interference and then reached home on Fernandez's RBI single.
The Terriers broke through in the fifth with three runs off three hits. Connolly singled and took second on a stolen base. She then advanced to third after Younan's walk and Wong's sacrifice bunt. Schanda plated both with a double and would later score on Martinez's sacrifice fly for the 4-2 lead.
SHU had one more gasp in the sixth with the help of a two-out error and walk. Hynes remained composed and finished the game with four straight outs to give BU its sixth win in eight games.
The defending Patriot League champion Terriers will conclude their final regular season tournament on Sunday (March 15) against defending Southern Conference champion Chattanooga at 11:15 a.m.
