Eichel, Grzelcyk Named CCM First Team All-Americans
April 10, 2015 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON -- Freshman Jack Eichel and junior captain Matt Grzelcyk of the Boston University men's ice hockey team were named CCM First Team All-Americans, as announced on Friday night.
Eichel and Grzelcyk are the program's first All-America selections since Colby Cohen earned a first-team nod in 2010. This is also the first time since 2009 that the Terriers have boasted a pair of first-team honorees. Colin Wilson and Matt Gilroy both earned that distinction that season.
Grzelcyk has been terrific in captaining the Terriers to the national title game for the 11th time in program history. The Charlestown, Massachusetts, native is second in assists (28), tied for third in goals (10) and fourth in points (38) among NCAA defensemen. Grzelcyk was instrumental in guiding the program to an impressive turnaround in 2014-15, as BU has won 28 games after earning just 10 victories the previous season.
Thanks to Grzelcyk's strong play, BU has been one of the top defensive units in the country, allowing a mere 2.27 goals per game. He has blocked 50 shots during the season and also led all defensemen as a plus-33. Grzelcyk was a Hockey East First Team All-Star and was also voted to the Hockey East All-Tournament Team and the All-Northeast Regional Team during the NCAA Tournament.
A native of North Chelmsford, Massachusetts, Eichel has been one of the most dominant skaters in the country throughout the entire season. The freshman forward leads the country with 70 points and is atop the national leaderboard in assists with 44. He has also scored 26 goals, which ranks third among all NCAA players.
Eichel was just the third freshman in league history to be named both the Hockey East Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season. He was the Hockey East Tournament MVP after setting a league record for points in a single tournament with 11. He was also a Hockey East First Team All-Star.
