ALLSTON, Mass. -
After allowing two runs off five walks in the first, the Boston University softball team slammed Harvard with 11 hits to claim a 6-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon. With its first road win in the series since 2010, the Terriers improve to 9-23, while the Crimson drops to 17-17.
Sophomore Moriah Connolly had a strong performance at the plate to lead the Terriers with three hits, two stolen bases, two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman Emma Wong, senior Mandy Fernandez and freshman Kaitlin Sahlinger all collected two hits apiece, while sophomore Brittany Younan earned two RBIs without a hit.
Besides making the most of her at-bats, Younan was impressive at short, throwing out five batters without an error and catching three pop ups. Both Fernandez and Wong made great catches in the outfield, as sophomore Makinna Akers (4-6) scattered three hits in the final 6.2 innings to collect the victory.
Appearing in the ninth straight game, junior Melanie Russell made the start but was relieved by Akers after walking four batters and getting one out on a sacrifice bunt. After leaving the bases loaded in the first, Harvard only threatened two more times.
The Crimson had runners at first and second in the sixth without an out, but Wong caught a hard liner and quickly threw to first for the double play. In the seventh, trying to mount a rally, Harvard left runners at the corners, as Akers induced a pair of pop ups to end the game.
BU left at least one runner in scoring position in each of the first three innings before finally breaking through in the fourth with four runs off four hits. After Fernandez and freshman Jilee Schanda hit back-to-back singles, Sahlinger laid down a bunt single that helped score Fernandez from second with the help of a defensive error.
With one out, Connolly singled to left center to tie the game. Wong had a fielder's choice RBI hit, and Younan followed with an RBI ground-out to give the Terriers a 4-2 lead.
Sahlinger extended the lead in the fifth on a two-out RBI single to right to plate senior Emily Felbaum, who was on second on a lead-off double. One inning later, Connolly scored the Terriers' final run following a single, stolen base, Wong's single and Younan's sacrifice fly.
BU will next visit Lehigh on Friday (April 17) for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch to conclude a three-game series that started with a doubleheader back on April 1.
