BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Current Patriot League regular season standings leader Lehigh tallied a run in three different innings and allowed just four hits to defeat the Boston University softball team, 3-0, on Friday afternoon at Kaufman Field.
Completing a three-game sweep over the Terriers (9-24, 1-8 PL), the Mountain Hawks improve to 28-6 and 11-1 in conference action.
After BU allowed a combined 20 runs in the first two meetings, sophomore Makinna Akers (14-4) was up to the task in the third game with the help of her defense, as they held Lehigh two runs below their season average on 11 hits. Reigning PL Pitcher of the Year Emily Bausher was even more impressive though, striking out six Terriers for her seventh shutout of the season.
Sophomore Moriah Connolly, sophomore Brittany Younan, junior Lauren Hynes and freshman Jilee Schanda all collected a hit against the Mountain Hawks.
Lehigh grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the second with a two-out triple to right center. The Mountain Hawks used an RBI double in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth to add two more insurance runs.
After Bausher retired the first nine Terriers, BU had its best chance to get on the scoreboard in the fourth. Connolly led off with a single and stole second to get into scoring position. With one out, she took third, as Younan hit a single and advanced to second on the throw. Bausher got out of the jam though by earning a strikeout and ground out.
The Terriers will remain in the Lehigh Valley and visit Lafayette for a three-game series over the weekend. They will open Saturday's doubleheader at 12 p.m.
