WORCESTER, Mass. - After the Boston University softball team erased a two-run deficit in the third, Holy Cross added a run in the fourth and three more in the seventh to defeat the Terriers, 8-4, on Sunday afternoon at Freshman Field.
Winning the weekend series after the previous day's doubleheader split, the Crusaders improve to 3-8 (2-4 PL), while BU drops to 7-20 (1-4 PL).
Both sophomores Moriah Connolly and Gabi Martinez collected two hits apiece, while senior Emily Felbaum had a two-out, two-RBI triple that tied the game at 4-4 in the third.
Junior Melanie Russell went one-third of an inning in the start and allowed three hits, including a three-run homer by Emily Jarvis. Sophomore Makinna Akers (3-5) collected the loss though, as she pitched the final 6.2 innings and gave up five runs, three earned, off 10 hits wile also tallying five strikeouts against one walk.
The middle of the line-up proved to be the difference for the Crusaders with batters 3-thru-6 going a combined 9-of-14 with four RBIs and six runs scored.
After Jarvis' three-run blast in the top of the first, Connolly led off with a single. She stole second and moved to third after Holy Cross mishandled the throw. Freshman Emma Wong followed with an RBI groundout to get BU on the scoreboard.
Connolly followed with an RBI infield single in the second, but the Crusaders pushed the lead back to two (4-2) with a two-out, RBI double in the top of the third. In their next opportunity at the plate, the Terriers rallied to tie the game on two hits.
With two outs, junior Lauren Hynes walked and advanced to second on Martinez's single to left. Felbaum plated both with a hard liner down the right field line for the triple. BU would never manage to grab the lead though, as Katy Watson (2-2) allowed just two hits in the final four innings for the victory.
The Crusaders responded with a two-out RBI single in the fourth and took advantage of a couple of defensive miscues to add more more runs and put the game away in the seventh.
BU will next visit UMass Lowell in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday (April 7) at 4 p.m.
