Eichel, Quinn Headline All-New England Honors
April 8, 2015 | Men's Ice Hockey
BOSTON - Boston University was well-represented when the 2014-15 New England Hockey Writers Division I All-Star teams and awards were announced on Tuesday, as freshman Jack Eichel was named the winner of the Leonard Fowle (Most Valuable Player) and George C. Carens (Rookie of the Year) Awards while David Quinn was the Clark Hodder Award (Coach of the Year) recipient.
Eichel, who was also honored as Forward of the Year (Herb Gallagher Award), was joined on the All-Star Team by senior linemate Evan Rodrigues and junior defenseman Matt Grzelcyk.
Voting was done by all Division I coaches and respective media outlets throughout New England.
Eichel becomes the 12th Terrier to receive the Fowle Award and the first since John Curry in 2007. The freshman enters this week's Frozen Four as the nation's leader in points (67), assists (43) and plus/minus (+49).
This is the 10th time that a BU bench boss has received the Hodder Award, as Jack Parker won six times after his former coach, Jack Kelley, claimed it three times.
Quinn orchestrated the biggest turnaround in the country and in program history, as the Terriers went from a 10-win campaign last year to an impressive season that has included 27 wins, the Hockey East tournament and regular-season crowns and the school's 30th Beanpot title.
Rodrigues trails only Eichel on the national scoring list with 61 points while Grzelcyk has recorded 37 points thus far, matching the most by a BU defenseman in the past 17 years.
Former BU standout and assistant coach Don "Toot" Cahoon will be honored with the Parker/York Award for contributions to New England Hockey. Cahoon helped the Terriers claim their first two national championships as a junior (1971) and a senior (1972).
